In her book, The Sun King and His Loves, author Lucy Norton takes the reader inside the life of Louis XIV, king of France. Christened Louis Dieudonné ("God's gift," which may explain some of his behavior and attitude in life), he was crowned in 1654 and reigned until his death in 1715 at the age of 72, an astounding 61 years. Although this slim volume is a work of historical scholarship, it is not the kind of dry read that makes one long for an Agatha Christie mystery. Norton blends facts of history (e.g., the construction of the fabulous palace and grounds of Versailles [a UNESCO World Heritage site], made possible by the financial probity of Louis XIV’s minister of finance for over two decades) with an examination of the psychological world of this absolute monarch, whose love of pleasure and beauty ruled the first half of his adult life. Altogether an engaging and enjoyable book, and a corrective to any mistaken envy of such an unrestricted life, "The Sun King and His Loves" clearly shows that being the Sun King did not shield Louis from great suffering, both physical and emotional. In 156 pages, Norton thus achieves the remarkable – eliciting strong sympathy for an absolute monarch.
