Yes, perhaps for a day every few months the negative pressure cowl doesn't do it's job, due to atmospheric conditions, so we're going to install an inline fan that can be switched on for a few hours in these rare moments. We haven't yet, but we will. Usually any trouble can be fixed in a few hours with a few cup-fulls of wood shavings, and a good (20) or so revolutions to increase aeration. I did this last night, and the smell went away in 4 hours. The lesson here is that you will need a basic understanding of composting - carbon-nitrogen balance and aeration. It is no rocket science, so armed with an understanding, any problem can quickly be overcome. I suspect previous commenters just weren't prepared to deal with this toilet. And yes - you handle a tray of compost every few months. Get over it. We have a green planet because of only one thing - metabolism. It is what sets us apart from Mars, and the outcome of metabolism is waste that is the source of all life on earth. If you can't get your head around this, and don't want to think about poo, then by all means, keep flushing and destroying our planet for your own mental well-being.
We are a household of two adults that are home all day (we run a small-holding and work at home), so this unit deals with two full-time adults, our guests, and overseas visitors. Training guests, and even children, is simple. I merely say that we flush with wood rather than water, and we have had no issues with misuse.
Some have mentioned urine overflow, which should not happen if the unit is properly installed. We had an early problem and discovered the cause - we plugged the overflow pipe in upon installation, and pushed the toilet unit back into place, which caused the pipe to bend upward. We found the problem on investigation, and took the slack out of the pipe, ensuring a drop along it's length, and we have never had reverse overflow since. Perhaps other reviewers did the same, but never thought to check. It is an easy mistake to make. Surprisingly, the brown overflow liquid had NO SMELL. Perhaps the bacterial balance in the unit takes care of that too.
We have not yet broken a handle, but we also have a much newer unit - having purchased it in 2014. Perhaps things have been strengthened a little. I recommend this unit daily. The world needs more composting toilets, and this one is about as fool proof as you can get it - as long as you understand some basics.
It absolutely NEEDS a fan or it will stink you out in the summer. We tried. Don't buy the fan from Sunmar, because at $60.00 ours quit in about six months. We used a computer fan (same as Sunmar did in theirs) and it cost us $13.50
The drain clogs from the debris falling through the drum, the drawer fills with pee. When the drain clogs you never know it till you walk in the bathroom and the floor is covered with brown stinking pee/crap soup. Its horrible.
The plastic step will just about break your leg when you inadvertently tap it as you go to step on it - very dangerous - we replaced it with a wooden box.
I would rate it lower but the one star is minimum. The design is very poor all round on this unit. Low grade design and manufacturing.
Sorry Sunmar, I really wanted to believe.
Sun Mar Excel Ne Composting Toilet -( Excel Ne , Sun-Mar Corp )
after a party. I'd suggest an entire 30L bag of "composting mix", wetting with 1 gallon, rotate drum 20 times, let sit for 1 day before using.
With 2" of "liquid" in the base, the drain only got a slow trickle! About 8 oz came out the front. Sun-Mar employees should clean this up! For the time being, I've propped the front of the unit up 7/8" and the soup has receded to 1" deep in the rear compartment. This means there's for EVER a stinky puddle for our nasal enjoyment. How dumb is that?
I want to return this $1500 piece of crap.
As to composting, I'm sure that will turn out ok, (pun intended) but Sun-Mar's design/execution in this case is LOUSY.
Most likely, the drainage port is mounted too high (there is NO reason to store a tray of pee if you need an evaporator to handle it). Another issue is probably that the gray plastic shield inside the back of the unit is too well sealed and
only lets "liquids" seep out. It's a challenge, but if this unit were still clean I would get in there and drill thirty 1/8" holes in that shield. If I could do the install over again, I'd block off the provided drainage ports and mount them in the bottom- which would mean raising the unit off the floor about 1 1/2"... I may still do that. Obviously height
is not a concern.. it's already 32" high. Also REDGREEN's review (above, somewhere) mentions the flimsy step stool. I plan to make a wooden one for safety's sake.
