"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. I just wish the technical aspects of the book were as detailed and correct as the information.
As noted by another, however, there are pages in here with nothing on each page but a long, vertical line with a single letter per "line" instead of a smooth paragraph. One page of this in any book is too many. This book has several pages of this kind of sloppy-but-correctable error. If the day comes that I have nothing but time to click and click and click and click, then I might spend it trying to read the rest of this.
I would love to see this author update it by correcting the vertical lines (and anything else that stands out) and then re-publish it as an update for those of us who bought it, and as a "new and improved version" for those who haven't bought it yet.
"Sit still! Gemini writers can be like butterflies on caffeine--you're here, there, and everywhere all at once. It may be difficult to train yourself to sit at your desk each day and produce a set number of words or pages, but in the long run, that's the only way to turn your dreams of authorship into reality." There are many other wonderful little tidbits of advice about each one of the signs. I wrote down several of these bits and put them in front of my desk so I can look at them whenever I sit at my desk. This is a slim volume, but when I purchased it, it was cheap, especially considering the information it offers. It also gives a little chart for using the zodiac to create characters, which I consider interesting for the future...as long as I can sit still long enough to finish my current novel :)
This book is broken into the twelve signs, and while giving basic astrological information like what planet the sign relates to, it also has a section on Foolproof Ways [Each Sign] Can Smash Writer's Block; The Guide to Dealing with Rejection [for each sign]; How to Avoid (and Handle) Rejection: Do's and Don'ts; Dishing It Out and Taking It: Giving and Receiving Criticism; Ten Paths to Publication for [each sign] Writer, and Famous Writers [of each sign].
As someone who plays around with writing different genres and hope to someday make a career of it as this writer has, I found a multitude of ways to apply the insights presented here into my everyday literary attempts.
Testing some of these insights has also been an engaging hobby for me as my belief system is one that is undecided as to whether astrology is an actual player in influencing the factors in one's life. In most cases I attempted, this author's (for lack of a better term) predictions had a 94% accuracy rate and has managed to pique this reader's interest in learning more about astrology and the various influences provided.
Overall, this book is highly recommended by this reviewer for anyone who enjoys writing literature and has an open mind or curiosity about the various influences and how to use them to be the most advantageous.
For writers looking to forge fictional characters, this too can be a great tool. A great book for Astrology lovers and others.
