The unit is also quite big and heavy - not something you can really tell from the pictures. I've owned quite a few hand mixers before and this is bigger than all of them. This is partly due to the retractable cord feature at the bottom, which to me isn't really that useful.
Another feature that I didn't like - and didn't think was particularly safe, was the whisk release button. On most mixers there is a separate button that you push in to release the buttons, but on this machine you have to push the Power button (1,2,3 etc) INWARDS (rather than upwards) to release them. This isn't very clear and it is quite easy to press the mixer on if it is still plugged in - someone could hurt their fingers given the power of the machine! Obviously this isn't a mistake that you make twice but something to be aware of if you get this mixer.
To be honest I wish I had bought a smaller, less powerful mixer, but this one does do the job for now.
Highly recommended for a basic hand mixer.
The Sunbeam is nicely made, with a rubberized handle, and a very convenient retractable cord. The cord is about 6 feet long when fully extracted. The beaters are dishwasher safe and nicely made as well.
The mixer feels nice in the hand with good balance and weight. It rests on its base nicely and doesn't tip easily.
The mixer has 6 speeds, and it's very powerful. I use mine to make mashed potatoes mostly, but if you're going to need it for slow, delicate mixing, the Sunbeam is not a good choice as it's slowest speed is not very slow at all. There is also a burst of power button.
To extract the beaters you have to push down on the speed selection switch while it is in the off position. This can be tricky, and more than once I've accidentally turned the mixer on instead of ejecting the beaters. I suggest you unplug it before trying to eject the beaters.
All in all... if you need a powerful mixer, you can't go wrong with this reasonably priced Sunbeam.
The quality of this thing is much better than I expected...it is a very well built unit. But the reason I'm rating it 5 stars is that it is incredibly powerful.
Example...I recently made chocolate chip cookies by my own modified recipe. Think double the chocolate chips and double the nuts, and you will get the idea...
The average hand mixer will give up before all of the flower is added...there is not enough torque to cut through the very thick cookie dough.
THIS hand mixer...
Not only will it keep going to mix in all of the flour...
But it keeps going through the chocolate chips and nuts.
AND...that is on the lowest setting!!!
Amazing power, well built, cheap...what more could you want?
