Thus far the heated blankey under-sheet bed-warmer [more of a bed HEATER, really] has come out of the plastic box/package AOK & the "install" went smooth [really just a matter of NOT laying the long cables under / within or between any of your bedding accessories]... all leading up to a Power Up and check it out.
First impression - THIS THING GETS really Really REALLY warm ! the "8" setting is enough to sleep in sub freezing weather without a cover & almost sweat; "6" or "7" is more realistic for all the warmth you can stand. I got mine on word from Mom who has greatly benefitted from hers to keep back pain & stiffness at bay. I always enjoyed the [very heated] waterbeds that had been my sleeping perches in the past + the fact that my own dodgy spine has been waking me up EVERY time the heating pad[s] would go off makes this item a no-brainer... with TEN HOURS before shut-off it's like a very gently "Sloth's Alarm"
Later - Having spent a night or two in the clutches of this wonderful Sunbeam item - HOW [& why] did I get along without this sort of warming goodness until now... WHY oh WHY! While providing a Full Body heating pad level of warmth, it also GREATLY increasing the effect & effectiveness of any blankets, etc. on your bed. I've found that I sleep without any real volume of covers & do just fine... sorry Grandmother - the quilts just aren't warm enough alone & with this thing they are TOO much.
Word of Advice - don't get between your pets [dog, cat, especially reptile] and the heated bed platform this provides... they love it, even if it does take a little while to realize that they will be BAKED if they try to stay "underneath" any blanket.
Other word of advice - place / buy / install a waterproof type of mattress pad between this item & your sheets so that ANY kind of moisture from WHATEVER sources in the bed won't get to the electrical parts of this item; although Sunbeam claims that it is completely washable, I wouldn't want to try it & Dry Cleaning is VERY forbidden per the label.
Only POSSIBLE complaint - it would be nice if there was an option for one controller to operate the whole surface, but not certain if individual control for each side isn't a better idea... all I need is a boyfriend to help me decide ;0~
- Gets the bed toasty warm.
- Having dual settings for each side of the bed is really handy. If one person wants the heater on and the other doesn't, no problem!
- You can definitely feel the heating element wires, but this is easily remedied by putting a normal mattress pad on top of it.
- Any setting above Low is too warm. And Low is even too warm after a while. I basically use it to pre-heat the bed before I get under the covers, then turn it off. Otherwise I wake up in a puddle of sweat.
- The connector between the power cord and the mattress pad can be a little wonky. Occasionally the lights on the controls would flash, indicating a connection error. So I'd basically unplug and replug it a couple times until the connection was good. Not a huge problem, just an occasional minor inconvenience.
- This was a Christmas gift for my fiancee, and she's repeatedly called it the greatest thing anyone's ever given her. She always cold, so being able to climb into a toasty bed has been a dream for her. I definitely recommend it, but also recommend holding on to your old mattress pad to put on top of this one so you don't feel the wires.
This particular mattress pad seems to be of the highest quality. The electric cabling / power cords are very heavy duty and solid. The gizmos for adjusting the temperature are extremely well designed - they have little glow lights so you can see them at night and the adjustment knob is nice and big so you can turn it easily and includes a large, lighted number so you know what setting it is at.
The pad fits very nicely on my queen sized bed (old fashioned kind, not the deep mattresses common nowadays). The elastic wrap goes deep under the mattress to hold things snugly in place.
I do have 2 slightly negative comments. One is that I found the pad wires to be a bit noticeable when lying on it, so I put the new pad under my old one and that works very nicely. Can't feel them now. And two, the pad is almost too hot. I use it only at setting #1 (lowest) and I am often still warm as the night wears on. We keep the house at 60 in winter and I'm quite thin blooded, so I can't even imagine cranking the thing up to the highest setting. That would be, as others have said, like a full body heating pad.
But on the plus side aside from the general quality and performance of the product, I'd add that I think this pad really helps me sleep better and to wake more refreshed in the morning. Reason: I'm totally relaxed and warm all night and not tense and scrunched up from fighting off the cold under 5 layers of blankets.
Overall, I give this two big thumbs up!!
We did not buy the first few at Amazon. This year we saw it was offered here at a better price, so have bought the last few at this site.
We turn ours on for a few minutes before bedtime so the bed gets warm and welcoming. Usually we turn the mattress pad's heat off once we get into bed since our nights don't get very cold, even with the windows open. It is never on for a long time.
The dual controls are essential. Instead of one partner grabbing a handful of blankets and pulling them to his/her side when getting cold, he/she can just tap on the control device and warm up quickly. The partner remains blissfully unaware of how close he/she got to being left with only a sheet and part of a blanket.
I can't feel any wires through the pad. It does wash up nicely and fits well over our mattress which is about 14" thick.
