Finally I came across this Sunbeam model, which has a variety of beaters with it. Most importantly, this mixer is sold with the blade style beaters that are needed to do a really good job. The power of this mixer is also top notch. Not only did I get perfectly smooth mashed potatoes the first time out, they were mashed with no lumps in a very short span of mixing.
If this thing will mash potatoes to my satisfaction, it will pretty well cover any mixing task you can throw at it, guaranteed. The mixing bowl that comes with it is a nice extra. The mixer and all accessories fit comfortably into the bowl for storage, and an extra stainless steel mixing bowl is always useful around the kitchen.
Update: We've been using this mixer for six years now. No problems at all.
Thank you Sunbeam!
I highly recommend this appliance to anyone who needs a hand mixer with real power.
The motor isn't the problem, however. Inside the mixer, the gears that turn the attachments are made of plastic. This is ok for light mixing, but using the dough-hooks for thick batters will inevitably strip the plastic teeth off the gears and render your mixer useless. And as another reviewer said, don't even think about trying to use the dough-hooks on anything that is actually a "dough" consistency, because the mixer can't handle it. Once the gears are stripped, the mixer cannot be repaired. Mine is broken now.
I would say if you're looking for a powerful mixer to mix batters or whisk liquids, this one will get the job done. But use the dough-hooks more than a few times, and you won't have a mixer anymore because the motor is more powerful than the plastic gears that turn the attachments.
This one truly great mixer. It has the guts you need in all of the necessary speeds. It has a speed burst which you you can kick in when a mix gets heavy and needs a bit more oomph. We've reviewed a number of more expensive lines like Kitchen-Aid and the like and found this to be very practically designed and boasts a sturdy 250 watt motor. They have a more expensive 9 speed 300 watt model but we prefer keeping it as simple as possible. They go two up on this mixer by, 1, providing a stainless steel mixing bowl with cover which doubles as a storage case,2, they supply three sets of beautiful designed mixing heads, a standard mixer set,a dough hook set and a set of whisks which is really a super extra. Most of the expensive brands all charge you extra for any or all of the mixer blades. I just burned out two of my old hand mixers on a 16" cheesecake. A Sunbeam mixer my mom gave me back in 1955. A Kitchen-Aid mixer which was their best model at the time. The Sunbeam lasted 56 years of constant use. The Kitchen-Aid barely 3 years(some best model). Sometimes we buy implements with far too many fancy doo dads that simply cut short their practical performing life. Like old washing machines, the simpler, the more reliable and invarialy the MO BETTER. The whisk blades look like a really great attachment especially for eggs, liquids and the like. Looking forward to a long and lasting relationship with this mixer much like our last Sunbeam.

Revisited 12-15-12 We've had our mixer for almost a year now and are more than pleased with it. It is easy to use at all speeds. The boost speed is truly great. We do do a lot of whisking of yolks on a water bath to triple the volume as well as whip whites to stiff peaks for meringue. The boost speed is so convenient and usefull when you want to finish something off quickly. The flat back is perfect for setting it down standing the mixer on end when you're not using it. The whisking attachments are great and didn't cost a penny more as they came free of charge with the unit. We really can't say enough nice things about this mixer as it is truly great.
