If you've tripped over your hose one too many times, and you don't have room in your backyard for a freestanding cart, this wall-mount hose reel will get you organized while taking up very little space. It mounts directly to an exterior wall and can be placed at any height. The Easylink system reduces water leakage and holds up to 100 feet of hose easily. You can even remove the reel itself for winter storage. When hand-cranking, you'll have to guide the hose a bit with your free hand, but this reel does a good job of winding it up properly if you take your time. Mounting requires a few wall screws (not included), but the holes are easy to access if you remove the reel first.See all Product description

Examining the carcasses of my dead reels I've learned that the plastic bleaches in the sun and the heat and then becomes brittle. It just crumbles. If the reel is full of hose, that extra weight doesn't help much either.
I'm going to try knocking back to just 50 feet of hose instead of the full reel of hose. My experienced guess is that will work better. Also I'll spray some UV protectant on the hub before I mount the reel. That may help.
So why do I keep buying these if they don't last too long? Well, for one I've got my holes drilled in the brick and I really like just being able to slap the new unit in place of the old one without drilling even more holes for some new reel which may or may not last any longer than this one. Also, I don't see where anybody makes a side winding reel that is that much better than this one for the price at this time.
This hose filled the reel with no room to spare - you must have to have a cheap 100ft hose to reach that capacity...
Now (8/09) the reel has broken. The weight of the hose had stressed the plastic and cracked the mounting base. Searching the Suncast website for warrantee info, I found that this model is not even listed on their products page any longer - seems to be replaced with a SWA100, and looking at the manual for that model they seem to have re-designed the base to be substantially beefier.
I'm going to try my luck at getting this replaced, but will have to look at it closely to see if there is anything that can be done to add support to the base to prevent this in the future.
As far as leaks, I had no issue, but I did follow the manufacturers instructions by applying the supplied lubricant to the o-rings, and re-lubed in the spring with Vaseline.
O-rings are not meant to operate DRY in a movable seal!
