Product Description
Gordon Lightfoot's Massey Hall concerts in Toronto are a 30-year tradition. The March 30th, 1969 concert not only allowed the singer/songwriter an opportunity to perform songs such as Ribbon Of Darkness that were quickly becoming standards for an adoring hometown crowd, it also allowed him to debut ambitious unrecorded songs like Ballad of Yarmouth Castle, an apparent precursor of his 1976 hit, The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Essentially solo except for guitarist Red Shea and bassist Rick Haynes at the concert, this 11-song acoustic performance is augmented by four electric studio recordings, circa 1968, including a cover of Dylan's Just Like Tom Thumb's Blue This 16-track CD completes Bear Family's reissue of Lightfoot's complete 1965-1969 five-album output for United Artists, and includes such enduring Lightfoot classics as Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Ribbon of Darkness and the Nashville version of Spin Spin.
Review
50 years ago, you could sit front row at one of Lightfoot's Massey Hall concerts for a top price of $5. Already a Canadian national treasure and right at the cusp of hitting his international prime, this live album of mostly new tunes was his farewell to his record company and manager as he knew the greener pastures were beckoning. With Shea and Haynes in tow, he delivered on a program that still sounds contemporary all these years later, both in form and content. Face it, Gord's gold.

This Bear Family CD also contains some non-concert songs, which can be a bit startling, since they are several years earlier than the "Sunday Concert." Three of them were released as singles in Canada only around the time of Lightfoot's first and second albums, including Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." The best of the five "bonus" songs is a demo of Lightfoot's "I'll Be Alright," a song from his second album. This version is almost identical to the released version, except for the percussion, which seems to be hand drumming on a box (actually quite successful.) The final version had brushes on a real drum kit, and was much better, but again, another chance to hear a slight variation of Red Shea's magnificent lead work. Overall, an A+ CD.

It's not as if I didn't know what to expect from him in a live show. I saw the Canadian maestro at the Royal Albert Hall in November 1977 (I think that was it) and he performed a wonderful set, including some requests. He was brilliant then, as he is on the live tracks of this album, recorded at Massey Hall, Toronto, which is almost his second home. There are some tracks here I know well (they appear on the United Artists Collection) and some tracks I have not before. All are sung beautifully and the accompaniment is equally as good, rather understated as if "less is more". They are typical Lightfoot tunes and do not disappoint.
The five bonus tracks are "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" written by Bob Dylan, "Movin'" (version 1), "I'll Be Alright", "Spin, Spin" (Nashville version, take 8) and "Movin'" (version 2).
All are excellent, although you can tell from the arrangement of the Dylan song that it was recorded in the 60's (girl high background vocals and production - it sounds very much like the style of the Walker Brothers recordings at that time). Some may suggest this version is dated or too poppy, but I like it. It would, though, be good to hear a new version from Gord, but I'm not sure if he intends to record another album, make another tour of the UK or put out another live album - Gord, if this gets back to you, please ...... As for the others, there is little information about when they were recorded, but all sound like early 70's material, so that's fine by me. I do know "I'll Be Alright" and I love it.
All in all, it's 54 minutes of pure Lightfoot enjoyment. I'm sorry I took so long to buy this, Gord, but I will listen to it often, just to make up for lost time.
