About the Author

Sandra Priest Rose, one of the founders of Reading Reform Foundation of New York, has worked in the New York City public schools for over fifty years, first as a volunteer, then as a teacher in the South Bronx, and finally as Chairman and Treasurer of this not-for-profit organization dedicated to training teachers in successful approaches to teaching reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. Her goal is to have every child read myths, fairy tales, history, biography, science and geography, and learn about music and art, in order to open up the world of knowledge – the rightful heritage of each child.

Finally, a succinct "how to", describing a method of teaching reading and writing that will work for all teachers of young children. As a First Grade teacher and Reading Specialist of Children K-3, this is a program I used over and over again because it worked. It is fail proof.

This book clearly and precisely describes a time tested and very successful program of teacher training and student learning that should be used in every elementary school classroom in the United States. It's a "How To" book for teachers, school administrators and dedicated parents. The program has transformed the students lives and, to their delight, helped the teachers become far more effective. Teachers who go through the program eagerly share their enthusiasm with fellow teachers and principals. There's some history of the Reading Reform Foundation and the teaching of reading in America along with some human interest anecdotes which makes the book more engaging. It is a must read for all elementary school teachers.

At last! Here is a sympathetic (and realistic) view of a program that trains teachers to teach reading effectively, right in their classrooms! Every child can be taught to read. This book will serve as a guide for teachers and a comfort to concerned parents from every community in the United States.

This common sense step-by-step approach to reading and writing has been used successfully in over 1500 classrooms. This book presents a story that needs to be told about how teachers can teach and students can learn. It is a book that must be read by anyone interested in how children learn to read.

This book gives a clear, successful blueprint for teaching reading for kindergarten through third grades, and can serve as a foundation for all students. More schools should adopt this template for success.
