The dosage is very small (most melatonin supplements are 3 milligrams), but it produces adequate drowsiness for my sons and I, who have trouble falling asleep. Also, the tablets are small and taste blandly sweet, so they can be chewed if swallowing a pill is a problem.
Within about thirty minutes of taking this product, I feel sleepy, but not drugged. The effect does not last more than, say, an hour, if I decide not to go to sleep after all.
It has been very helpful for getting my sons, who have high-functioning autism, on a good sleep routine and I would recommend this smaller dosage to parents before trying a higher dosage or to parents of children who do not like the flavor of liquid supplements and/or cannot swallow pills. It also cost less than the liquid supplements I've seen.
I like the taste, and I devolve it in my mouth about 20 or 30 minutes before bedtime.
Now, does it work? Yes, it does for me. This seems like the real thing and as effective as any other kind I've tried over the years.
Will it work for you? Of course this is NOT medical advice, but as far as I can tell from my own experience and research, the answer is, "it depends." The National Sleep Federation notes that melatonin is the only hormone (yes, it is a hormone! not some other kind of vitamin or herb) that may be sold over the counter in the US. It is banned in many other places. A physician friend estimates that it works for "about 50% of people" although I suspect that's more of a guess than data. The sleep foundation suggests that it may be a disruption if taken for long periods of time.
My primary use case is for jet lag, where I take it by doing this: I figure what time I want to get up in my destination (say 8am), count back 9 hrs (e.g., 11pm at the destination), and then take melatonin at that exact time in the corresponding timezone wherever I am (e.g., on an airplane). Here's an example: suppose I go to Japan from San Francisco, and want to be up at 7am. That translates (in the summer) to 3pm the day before in SF. Now back up 9 hours, and I would take melatonin at 6am San Francisco time to start the 9 hour "sleep cycle" to get on Japan schedule.
For jet lag, even more important than melatonin is exercise and good eating.Read more ›
