About the Author
Melissa has been sewing since before she can remember; if you believe her mom she started at age 3, when she was still too young to be allowed to use the scissors. After 12 years of teaching high school theatre, including costuming and sewing, she left the classroom to focus on teaching through her blog, Melly Sews, and her sewing patterns, Blank Slate Patterns. She is in talks to design a fabric line, and has a continuing pattern licensing agreement with McCall's Pattern Company. Four Blank Slate Patterns launched in March 2014 on their Green Pepper rack. Three more will be coming in September 2014. Her current line totals 42 patterns and are available at http://blankslatepatterns.com in PDF format.

I have many sewing books with projects, and this is one of my favorites so far. It has full-sized patterns in the back for the basic bodice, which you fit perfectly to yourself and then alter to make the designs. I *adore* this method because it means that once good fit is achieved, you don't have to do it over and over for each pattern, and you can just make gorgeous garments to your heart's content. Since it seems that I usually spend most of my time on fitting/muslins, this is a huge advantage to me! Also, thank you for the extended sizes provided -- that alone makes it a bargain at any price.
I hadn't done much pattern adjusting before so I was nervous starting my first dress. But the instructions are so clear that is was a breeze and I made my first custom bodice (that fit great) on the first try! I am looking forward to trying more of the styles and changing up the skirt options too.
The book is for women and girls, and gives patterns and fit instructions for both. There are casual and dressy styles, and even cute ways to wear them with different outfit options.
If you've been wanting to add more dresses (that actually fit!) to your wardrobe - this is a great book to get!
I just received a copy from the publisher. I've had many sewing books and this one is right up there with the best ones as far as visual appeal. It's good to note that the sewing patterns are actually in the back of the book. No need to copy or resize. It's laid out very well and easy to follow. Great instructions and even tips for beginners. The photography is beautiful. There are a lot of varied body shapes and sizes represented in models so you can tell the dresses will fit most any size.
The dresses vary is style. There were 2 girls dresses and 2 women's dresses I immediate wanted to make. The rest are all nice too. One or two weren't my style but that's to be expected. I've sewn a lot of the author's sewing patterns before so I trust they will be well drafted and beautiful when sewn. Can't wait to get started!
