Sudoku Samurai is a very pretty version of the famous number puzzle. You can select different Japanese watercolor backgrounds and you can even choose to use Kanji instead of Western numerals.

Unfortunately, the actual game play leaves a lot to be desired. To enter a number, you have to tap on the cell, then tap on the number. This means filling in notes becomes a tedious process of tapping cell, number, cell, number, cell, number, cell, number, cell, number, over and over again. There is no option to tap on the number first, then all the cells you want to fill in, a much faster method and the one I prefer.

The game also does not automatically clear your notes when you fill in a cell. You have to remove your notes manually, using the same tedious cell, number, cell, number.

The interface can be a bit confusing unless you read the instructions. Tap the brush to switch between pencil and pen; the only visual indication of which mode you are in is the amount of ink on the brush. The doll in the upper right gives you hints, the lantern in the upper left is the back button. Tapping the beads on the left undoes your last entry, while the sword clears the entire board.

The transitions between screens is extremely slow, with a paper screen closing and opening. The game crashed several times on my Motorola Xoom tablet during one of these transitions.

This app was built using Corona, which means it's chock full of data miners, including OpenFeint, Papaya Social, Flurry, AdKnowledge, InMobi and Inneractive. It calls on the Full Internet Access, Read Phone State and Identity, and Access Network State permissions.

Overall, it's a beautiful app, marred by a clunky interface and a bounty of data harvesters.

Yesterday I connected my Kindle Fire to my computer to erase all the OpenFeint data. I do this often to get rid of this as normal housekeeping. Today the top reviews claim that this game contains OpenFeint. There is no button offering you to access and install OpenFeint nor is it installed on my Kindle Fire through the installation of this game app. I therefore conclude that this game does not install it or use it or ask you to sign up for it.

People are using a Google app to scan their electronic devices and the scanner tells them that a certain game utilizes various potential Malware programs. Unfortunately the scanner is not accurate as it cannot tell if it picked up only a Kernel of software in the basic SDK or Software Development Kit. Just because the SDK has the kernel in it, does not mean that the developer of the scanned app turned it on and used it.
As verification here is the disclaimer that the scanner app states in their own detailed instructions.

DISCLAIMER:
We can't guarantee that our results are 100% correct. Sometimes addons, like pushnotifications, are integrated in larger sdk's, and the developer doesn't need to use them, although we detect them. We strive to be conservative about marking apps as suspected, but errors can occur.

Game review:
This is a standard Sudoku game and it has nice graphics and even includes a notation feature. It features four modes of game play:
Modes:
* Easy
* Medium
* Hard
* Expert
In the game, touching the sword clears the numbers you have placed, touching the pencil changes it to a brush to write the number with. Use the pencil to enter your notes after you tap a square to set it up into note taking mode.

I really like this app. It installed easily on my Kindle Fire and has played without crashing. It has three levels--easy, medium and hard. It has attractive graphics, pencil notes, an undo feature and hints. If played in landscape mode, a tiny bit of the bottom of the chart is cut off; if this bothers you, play it in portrait mode, but otherwise this seems a very good Sudoku app to me. I do recommend reading the "How To" though as some of the iconography is cryptic.

Sudoku is a logic puzzle, the object of which is to fill the (9 by 9) playing field with numbers so that each (3 by 3) sub-grid contains all digits from 1 to 9. This is an extremely oversimplified explanation, as there are also constraints that make this a lot harder than it seems.

I love Sudoku and was really looking forward to checking out Sudoku Samurai.

This app has a lot of options you can tinker around with: everything from backgrounds and markers, all the way to the actual numbers can be changed! Not that you really need to alter anything from the default setting, and you rarely see the background (unless you press the "Tea cup" while playing), but I still like that the choices are present.

The graphics (backgrounds), music and sound are all quite good, and I really enjoyed my time with the game until it crashed while transitioning to the second level. I re-started the game and chose to "continue"... Only to have the game take me to the Shoji Doors loading screen and get stuck there. By pressing the back button a few times, I got to the "About" screen. The only button I could get to work here was the lantern that took me to the Sungift Games web site. Once there, I could purchase their games from multiple vendors - including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Google Play.

After multiple restarts I finally started a new game and went back to the first puzzle ("continue" would always hang my game at the loading screen). After solving a few grids, I quit mid way to see if I could pick up from where I left off; - I COULD NOT! The same loading screen problem occurred when I chose anything but to start a new game.

I uninstalled and re-downloaded the program. Same problem. Continue does not work!
