I've had this for over a week, and so far, I really like it. I started a new job and am at a standing desk all day. I needed to get my steps in, and this has done the trick.
I read several reviews that mentioned their knees hurting after using it. Mine were creaking when I used it (I'm super healthy and active so this was odd to me) so I started messing around with different techniques. Here's what I've discovered:
Use the stepper like the lady in the video. She pushes the pedals down by pressing through the heels using her hip and butt muscles (I think this is where the "twisting" motion is supposed to come in). There's no twisting motion in the stepper, it comes from using those muscles to take your steps. It requires an active stance on the stepper that engages your core (extra bonus!)
As others have said, don't use more than 10 minutes or it will overheat. The other reason to not do it any longer is that ANY repetitive motion for too long will cause wear and tear. If you were to walk a flight of stairs for 30 minutes straight, you'd probably have knee problems, too. :) Use it in moderation in conjunction with other workouts and you'll be better set for success.
I've also found that I can get a great hamstring and butt workout if I use it while sitting. I put it a couple feet away from my chair and press down with my heels (toes in the air). It's a really strong isolation of those muscles.
I get about 3000 steps a day in on this by stepping 10 minutes every hour. It's a great way to keep my body moving while being in the office.
