5*****Stars. Ophelia Beliveau lives in Bayou Gavotte, Louisiana, where she owns a landscaping business. Ophelia is also a vampire like her sister, Violet. When Ophelia was twelve years old, the vampire gene took hold and her fangs burst out. Only those with the gene turn into vampires. She has no problem with the sun, she eats food, although her steaks are pretty much raw, and she does not require a lot of blood. She does not live longer than anyone else and she can have children. Not your run of the mill vampire. As a vampire, Ophelia is irresistible to men, and she has the power to get them to do what she wants. But, someone is destroying her garden and the plants she needs for customers, in addition to hanging a dead cat outside her door. Ophelia calls the police department and when detective Gideon O'Toole arrives to investigate, life as she knows it is about to change. There is an instant attraction between the two, but is it her allure or is it an honest attraction?Ophelia finds it hard to trust men since they either can't stay away from her, or when they discover she is a vampire they run screaming. So she is convinced that she must stay away from Gideon before he finds out what she really is and turns against her.Bayou Gavotte, is a small town where most anything goes, kinky clubs, and criminals who work along with the police keeping the peace. When Gideon insists on protecting Ophelia she does everything in her power to push him away, only her garden being destroyed is the least of her problems. People are being blackmailed, and one of them is Gideon's own sister, Artemisia. Then people are murdered, and all evidence points to Ophelia. Someone is out to ruin Ophelia, but who and why? Gideon is not about to let Ophelia go to jail, and with help from his criminal friends he sets out to prove her innocence. While Gideon investigates the murders he falls more and more for Ophelia, and the feeling is mutual but can she let her guard down and accept him? There are a lot of twists and turns in this book and I did not figure out who the culprit was until almost the end. This was a book so different from the usual vampire stories, it was actually more a murder mystery than anything else. It held my interest from the very beginning to the end and I can't wait to start the next Bayou Gavotte book.If mystery, murder, romance and vampires are your cup of tea then drink up, because this is the book for you. “-Linda Tonis, Paranormal Romance Guild online, November 2012
