Review

Ed Calle has been performing in the Miami area for the past 25 years. In general, Calle is known for playing Latin jazz, and his tenor sax has graced the work of Gloria Estefan from the early days of her Miami Sound Machine. However, on Sunset Harbor (Concord Vista), Calle decided to understate the overt Latin aspects of his playing without losing the music's complexity. "I didn't want to make a record that people in Iowa would think was funny or far out," Calle says. "My focused goal as a musician is to appeal to as many people as possible without selling out or playing music that is overly simplistic."

I've always been a crazy mixed up kind of person and I discovered Ed's wonderful talent with the gift of his latest album Twilight. Appetite wetted I ordered Sunset Harbor from Amazon. I was a little nervous putting the cd into the player, there's nothing worse than discovering a piece of music that thrills you, buying some work of the artist and then discovering the original piece you heard was the exception to the rule. Not so this baby!! Ed's playing passion leaps from the player and bedazzles the senses from the work go. You really get a sense of a man at one with his instrument, so entwined they are as one, seemly to have an innate sense of what his music fans desire. This album has an entrancing balance of rhythm, romance and passion that all go to keep the cd permanently in the player. I'm totally hypnotised by his playing and indeed find myself compelled to the buy the rest of his works without a shadow of a doubt I'll experience his passionate playing in all of them. I wanted to mention a few favourite tracks off this album but its so infuriating, they are all so dam good. I thought Robbie was correct with Rum & Coke but then I play San Sebastian a lot because I love its latino feel - when he gets those high notes my toes curl! Oh and then I also wanted to mention Reasons, a track that echoes around my mind long after its gone and leaves me thinking that this guy must be awesome live!!

Ed Calle is really a great horn player, you can listen to his range of stuff from popular, to smooth jazz, to bop, and the guy can really do it all. I happen to prefer his original compositions, and this album is very much geared at a more mainstream smooth/jazz audience.

This is one you can listen to over and over. Highly recommended.

Although I am new to jazz, I have found this albun to be one of my favorites. Each time I listen to a song, I hear something new and beautifully different. Ed Calle plays his instrument as if he is is having a wonderful love affair. This is one album that I will be getting continuous pleasure from for a long time. I just wish he would produce some more quickly.

I heard the song "Strollin'" from Ed Calle's CD "Sunset Harbor" on the radio, and had to have it. It's a melody that stays in my head, and that makes me feel great. The rest of the CD is just as wonderful. Beautiful melodies, music for dancing, music for snuggling, a lovely version of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Reasons". Ed Calle sends feelings through his sax, and his love of his music and the instrument shine through. If you love jazz, you'll love this CD. It's a "must have."

I heard the piece Sunset Harbor on DMX and ordered the CD the same day. I have nearly worn out the cut of Rum & Coke. This CD has laid back and jump up, exactly how I like to listen to music. I highly recommend this CD and I intend to get more of his music.

When Ed Calle's Twilight cd came out I purchased it and like it so much I went out and picked up "Sunset Harbor". I must have been in a bad mood when I first listened to it, because for the most part I just let it sit and collect dust for the past couple years always selecting some other sax cd to play. I popped it in today and WOW! What have I been missing all this time?! Some songs are soft and relaxing like "San Sebastian". Others like "Nightfall"are soft and sensual. All the songs have a great beat. I'm definately going to give this cd more playing time.
