The box collection includes a couple of gems along with the fairly good documentary. The documentary does a great job of illustrating the early formation of the Alice Cooper band. I've been a fan from the early 70's and was fascinated by the early details. It does torture the viewer a bit with an over-long telling of Alice's adventures in his cliche rock star drug years. This at the expense of what would have been more interesting stories of the makings of the better albums.
I'm more excited about the two extra disks (yes there are four disks in the box but two of them are the documentary in DVD and Blu-Ray formats). The Montreal footage apparently didn't have a good soundtrack hence they piece together a soundtrack from other period sources. It is distracting to see drummer Neil Smith clearly playing different parts to what comes out of the speakers. However, what comes out of the speakers is a fantastic soundboard recording of live "Killer"-era Alice Cooper in all their raw glory. "Schools Out" is a listed track but is not at all a fully realized song at this stage in the band's history. It amounts only to the familiar guitar riff repeated at length in the middle of "Long Way to Go" while Alice does his shtick. I like this disk because of it's revelatory soundtrack with no polish and good quality sound.
I was not expecting to be too impressed with the July 2009 recording from Montreux but was delighted to find that it is also a very raw and revealing document - though audio only. If you're familiar with good quality soundboard bootleg recordings, this is what you'll hear. There is absolutely no polish applied to this recording. The background and lead vocals are sometimes off a bit. It is a very rough mix - with the multiple tracks recorded at the sound desk as the audio was being fed to the speakers. This recording sounds as if it spent zero time in the hands of a professional producer and engineer. And that is what I find so much fun about it. It's is as honest a recording of Alice Cooper and band as we're likely to hear on a commercial release.
