I'm not sure what qualifies as a "killer" funk compilation, but this one more than satisfies my funk cravings. Some dynamite tracks abound on this collection of rare funk "from deep in the crates" as the compilers label it.
I have two other volumes in BGP's "Super Funk" series, but had missed getting this first volume. I'm very happy that I went back and got this one, because it's good as the other volumes, balancing some extremely obscure artists with a few that are better known. The underrated Houston Outlaws, who recorded for the Westbound label, turn with a great unreleased track. Another Westbound artist, Denise La Salle, serves up the saucy "Get Up Off My Mind", Detroit's legendary Dave Hamilton weighs in with the appropriately titled "Groove," while the Pazant Brothers, from New York, also turn heads --- and ears --- with the tight grooves of "Skunk Juice." Among the more obscure entries, I really dig the tracks by Ann Alford, Abraham & the Casanovas, and Robert Lowe. But hey, there isn't a dud on here.
From what I can discern from the credits and liner notes (some songs give a copyright of 2000, but that was the release date of this CD), the tracks on here span the years 1969 to 1974. A golden age of soul and funk, and these obscure offerings are wonderful examples of how energetic and vital this music was ... and remains.
