This movie gets a lot of unfair hate from people and critics. Even Bob Hoskins (who plays as Mario) said he was embarrassed for this movie. Despite its bad reputation due to being nothing like the Mario universe as we know it, people fail to realize that when this movie was written, they had very little source material to go on. Mario 3 had just come out when they made this movie so besides jumping on goombas and getting power ups, they didn't have much else to go on. Thus the studio took it in a more real world tone and filled in the blanks however they wanted and then changed the source material to fit the design they had come up with. I understand the criticism for this movie and I won't defend it on that front but it's honestly not that terrible of a movie. Yes, they could have and should have made lots of design and costume changes but for what they gave us, it's not bad. Anyone who would criticize this movie by saying it's awful and/or the worse video game to movie adaptation is a prime example of the band wagon effect. It's terrible for today's standards and expectations but pretty decent for the time it was made which is how it should be judged.

I ordered this movie because I couldn’t find it anywhere else and luckily I found it on Amazon. Because my son is a huge Mario Brothers fan and always wanted to see a live action version of his favorite cartoon and video game character. So I remembered I watch this one when I was a kid and ordered it for him he was so excited when it arrived! Even though it really is almost nothing like the cartoon the way the characters are portrayed in this version he still loved it I think it’s very decently made movie for when it was made in the early 90s. You can expect it to be super high-quality CGI like some of these newer movies we have that are out now. But if you’re a fan of Mario brothers definitely watch this movie even though it was on DVD it still looks good quality on our 4K TV ! If you have any questions about this super Mario brothers DVD feel free to ask me. Also if you felt my review to be helpful please check this was helpful thanks!

Regardless of the negative reviews it received while in theater, this was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I still remember it fondly. Maybe you have to be a kid from that era to appreciate the old school video game kitschy references throughout the film, but I just love it! Needless to say, now that I am grown and have kids of my own I was thrilled to buy this DVD for them to share the awesomeness. My six-year-old thinks it’s the greatest film ever made… which, I’ll be honest, brings a tear to my eye. Proud parent here. I’m so glad he inherited my terrible taste in films! Honestly though, it’s a fun movie. 90% of the actors are surprisingly popular ones, the costumes and sets are unique, the soundtrack is snappy and the effects are appropriately cheesy. It’s the entire package! My only complaints are the lack of “extras” on the DVD menu. Don’t expect any outtakes cut scenes or commentary. There is none. Think of it as a glorified VHS… which is appropriate really.

I bought it because in the USA the only "localized" version we can get is a trash DVD that isn't even anamorphic. I like this movie more each time I watch it. The art direction is awesome. John Leg-wahhhhh-zamo should come back to play Wahluigi in some kinda reprise.

The portrayals of Mario and Luigi by Bob Hoskins and John Legeizamo make this movie worth seeing for hard core Mario Brothers fans. Otherwise it is a total heartbreaking flop!
The way they did the goombas and koopas, the way they did King Bowser and Yoshi, and the Mushroom Kingdom itself... Everything was just wrong wrong, wrong. It is so bad that it almost feels like they were insulting the audience intentionally.
What a sad waste of what could have been a fantastic franchise.

So a bit of background about me- I love movies that are so bad there they’re funny. I’ve been looking for this movie for a while, and it’s just as terrible as I remembered. Between the ridiculously bad SFX/acting, Dennis Hopper’s hair, and the oddball plot involving Peach’s father, this movie makes my personal top 10 of bad movies. Totally worth it for a movie under $10!

I don't know why this movie happened, and I hate knowing that it put the nail in the coffin for future game to movie projects for many years, but seeing this still brings back good memories.
I had wanted to see this movie so badly as a kid that now looking back on it I feel bad for my parrents who had to sit through it with me. I didn't understand what was happening but I was overjoyed to hear the word "goombah" and see bomb-ombs and magic mushrooms, and to see live action versions of Princess Daisey and King Koopa.
It's a terrible story, no lie, but it is so bad it is good in a sense. It is a mixture of Jurrassic Park and Blade Runner with some Nintendo spices mixed in, and then all those things are put into a car and that car is smashed into a wall at 98 miles per hour. It is an aweful glorious car wreck which you can't help but stare at.
The move makes no sense, the plot is all over the place and you can't really figure out what makes the Super Mario Brothers so Super. But dammitt, it's all the Mario that I got as a kid and I had to live with it and be happy.
Now as an adult I actually watch it after having read the backstory of the actors and directors involved. The story behind the filming deserves a movie all its own. How a wife husband directing pair managed to destroy a world-recognized gaming icon is beyond me, even knowing Hollywood's penchant for doing such a thing. Bob Hoskins still calls this the worst film he has ever done, and the story of how that expression came to his lips is absolutely riviting. If you haven't done so, go and find the story behind the film, and then be amazed how that story makes you want to see this movie again just to watch the car wreck over and over again.

Brought back great memories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2017Verified Purchase
Before I go into my review it should be known im a huge fan of this film. Yes I enjoyed the games but I remember going to see it in the cinema and it was very memorable experience even more so because there was a Jurassic Park trailer before the film started which made the audience go nuts especially the kids as it scared the hell out of us hearing the T-Rex roar in a multiplex. I was 11 at the time and after the film finished I was buzzing. As time passes I never think of films as dated, I watched the Blu-Ray and loved it even more because it was just great to go back to Chester cinema in 1993/94 and be a kid again. I remember my parents buying me the VHS when it was released. The transfer isn't amazing, but certainly not bad either, I was satisfied
This comes with decent extras as well with a very cool making of and behind the scenes extras which to my surprise made it on here as the film if I remember bombed at the box office. My only grunt is I'm not a fan of the artwork and would much prefer the original cover artwork but overall a great release for a underrated 90's kids flick. BUY

Dieser Film sah den 11. September und reptiloide Politiker vorraus
Reviewed in Germany on May 8, 2017Verified Purchase
Wer weiss.

Trust The Fungus
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2016Verified Purchase
"Trust The Fungus" should have been on the poster. It's always gratifying when a movie that is universally maligned turns out to not only be perfectly watchable, but strangely enjoyable and fascinating. There's a lot of strangeness, off-kilter details and eccentric moments throughout Super Mario Bros. that are normally smoothed out of such high budget movies, to ensure that what's left isn't going to be too weird. Clearly this movie gives most people headaches, but since there is no such thing as objectivity when discussing how you feel about any artistic work, I honestly really liked this film, without a trace of irony (Ironic movie-watching is anathema). This is heresy to many, but of the two big-budget films featuring dinosaurs that came out in 1993, the other being Jurassic Park of course, I'd much rather rewatch this one.
This blu-ray is especially worthwhile for the fantastic hour long documentary which is one of those rare extras where everyone is honest about what a debacle this production was and no one pretends it was all fun and games. Co-director Annabel Jankel sums up my feelings when she says, "I watched it for the first time in 20 years and funnily enough I really rather enjoyed it and I found myself just smiling and feeling kind of warm and toasty inside, despite the fact that it's had this terrible reputation and repercussions over the years...[it's] crazy and bonkers and marvelous."

Great stupid fun
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 6, 2017Verified Purchase
I like the this rather over-blown silly film. Everyone involved is clearly having fun with an utterly crazy idea blown out of all sensible proportions. It's a good laugh, and surprisingly the rather pedestrian visual effects have stood the test of time. It's an entertaining little romp.
