The Discovery Habitat is PERFECT for viewing the pets. The large clear door is the #1 feature that beats every other cage.
The outer wheel is a bust. The poop and urine leak out terribly and it's very noisy (even before they add their pellets to it). We don't use it anymore and have bought the other larger exterior Super Pet wheel that has a poop dish at the bottom. I don't see how the 'silent wheel' product or a bunch of other decorative products would fit in this cage. But do they in any cage?
We put the food pellets and cabbage on the middle level and no bedding. It is easy to keep clean from food, urine, or poop.
I also like the double base. The inner tray is rounded and the square outside gives it stability. We have cats who rub against the cage. It doesn't slide as easily as the other cage.
If I could do it over, I'd buy 2 Discovery Deluxe Habitats for the viewing.
This is my hamster saga and review.
First, my review.
The water bottle is horrible, it leaks. We bought a replacement, but the hole it made in the bars where it bent them up is large enough for a just-weaned Dwarf runt-of-the-litter baby to escape and freeze to death. We placed a larger, adult hamster inside, NO WAY it can escape.
The Carry cage is small, but extremely helpful.
The wheel is also awesome, makes a little noise.
You can actually SEE your hamster thru the door. The thing is, with the latch, DON'T PUSH TOO HARD!!!! It is hard, even for me, to close it. Tape might help. If you push the latch too much, it will probably break.
Now for the Hamster saga :-)
We bought 3 dwarf hamsters, assured they were all female, and put them in this cage. (this cage is NOT tested for teddy bear/Syrian hams, seems too small.) 2 got along, one did not and was being killed. We seperated the weak one and bought it the Dazzle cage (which worked well) only to discover the other 2 had mated! NOT BOTH GIRLS!!!! So we bought the Treat Zone cage for the male and let the female raise her litter. The female made a nest in the wheel, put her babies in, then RAN ON IT! To remedy this, simply put a tube beneath the wheel. It catches and grounds the wheel. (My dad was very sweet to let us keep all the hamsters.
We had 3 females, 5 males. For the males in the litter, we bought the Xtreme Challenge Cage. (I am not right now writing a review for that, but you can check it out there.) We let the females stay with their mom. The mom died of old age in this cage at a friend's house. Of the females, 2 got along, 1 didn't. We seperated the weak one (this time to a large plastic bin) only to discover that BOTH FEMALES WERE PREGNANT!!!!
Oh my. We had 2 litters, totaling 11. This time, 6 males, 5 females. We then bought 4 little portable Critter Trail cages for them. This ends my hamster saga. Some died, some lived some got sick, some were given away. As of today, we have 5 hamsters. The first male still survives.
The wheel and water bottle can be placed in three different places, so it's adaptable. The top is sturdy and makes it easy to carry the entire thing around.
I love this cage, it's great for small animals (in my experience it's best for mice). It's easy to put together, safe, sturdy, and quiet.
Edit: After many months of owning this cage, I've started to have some minor problems. The water bottle has repeatedly fallen so I've removed it, added it a different water bottle (one that latches onto the bars) and added an extra CritterTrail Wheel. The wheel has started to get clogged and impossible to clean so I've replaced it with another CritterTrail Wheel. Buyer be warned; durability does not last!
I had tried using tubing to combine two cages but my cat can just stand on the tubes, breaking it, and put his paw inside either cage. So I'm back to using one cage. :(
