The wheel and water bottle can be placed in three different places, so it's adaptable. The top is sturdy and makes it easy to carry the entire thing around.
I love this cage, it's great for small animals (in my experience it's best for mice). It's easy to put together, safe, sturdy, and quiet.
Edit: After many months of owning this cage, I've started to have some minor problems. The water bottle has repeatedly fallen so I've removed it, added it a different water bottle (one that latches onto the bars) and added an extra CritterTrail Wheel. The wheel has started to get clogged and impossible to clean so I've replaced it with another CritterTrail Wheel. Buyer be warned; durability does not last!
I had tried using tubing to combine two cages but my cat can just stand on the tubes, breaking it, and put his paw inside either cage. So I'm back to using one cage. :(
The Discovery Deluxe habitat (which is the slightly larger and less colorful version of the Clearview habitat) addresses a major problem that has plagued many earlier Super Pet habitats...with partial success. I bought this product largely because an older habitat was incontinent...it could no longer hold its tubes shut. The rigid Fun-nels connection method used was unforgiving and, relative to the rigidity and strength of the tubes, directed most of the stress to either the wall of the habitat or the connecting points themselves. Since I worked hard to protect the wall from cracking, the connecting points eventually either grew weak and failed or suddenly experienced an unpleasant force and immediately gave way. For anyone who desires to clean the cage with any frequency, this should be a major concern. The Discovery Deluxe uses a different connection method for the Fun-nels. It has a U-shape socket that holds the outermost ring of a Fun-nel, securing it into place with a pressure clip...simply a ridged peninsula of cage wall. While this is an improvement over my previous habitat, it still offers little forgiveness and largely places the longevity of the entire habitat in the hands of this weakest point.
The Clearview and Discovery Deluxe habitats are supposed to be mate-able with the Burrowing Maze Accessory. That accessory replaces the small green dome on top, thus offering a more spacious nesting area that also includes a couple of bonus Fun-nels ports. But good luck finding the accessory for sale. Original MSRP <$20, it's been discontinued and can rarely be found in leftover inventory or a random auction site. So don't count on that feature unless you strike gold.
As for my specific item, the water bottle has been moved to the back left position, rather than the right side. Unless you want to pry off the hanging wire and bend a new entry point for the bottle tip, you have no flexibility with the location of this feature. You can opt not to use it, but then you need another water bottle that can hang entirely inside. Also, the shelf did not mount well in its proper location. The instructions are 'specific' yet misleading in their language. I found that the shelf mount hooks did not fit the actual angle of the wire walls. This forced me to put decent pressure on the wire to allow one of the rearward hooks to connect, thus warping the cage wall so that the frontward foot hung well past its intended point. Also, I had to mount it higher than the instructions stated (depending on how you read them) so that the distance was small enough for the shelf to reach both sides and to leave the nesting area access tube entrance properly exposed. Finally, the instructions show an elbow Fun-nel to be included as the 'ramp' to the shelf. Mine came with a straight Fun-nel instead, which looks to be much less inviting for my hamster...evidenced by his infrequent use of the shelf. That Fun-nel is the only means of access to the shelf unless you add something freestanding in the habitat.
I opted not to use the included wheel based upon the reviews of others...noisy, leaky, unbalanced. Instead, I have a virtually silent wheel that I purchased some time ago at a local pet shop. it sits easily in the front of the habitat and is indeed virtually silent. I used the wheel port to add another Fun-nel entrance, increasing the complexity of the maze system for my hamster to explore and enjoy.
In case you struggle like I did to confirm, know that there are three total Fun-nel connection points. Left and right sides and center back. The habitat comes with what you need to block off all three ports, in case you have intention of adding Fun-nels to the habitat, although you'll likely find that you need to use the included wheel as one of the end caps. Note that the dimensions do not factor in any connected Fun-nels, so if you plan to set this in a tray or tote, you'll need to factor that in. The Fun-nels connect low enough that a tray lip of any size will interfere. I use under-bed totes for my habitats as a collection point for any animal waste or bedding that may find its way out. The totes I already own were not wide enough to accommodate this habitat by itself, much less with a rear Fun-nel attached.
It's a relatively nice habitat. I recommend it to anyone already committed to the Super Pet Crittertrail line.
Easy to clean
2 levels for more area
3 ground level expantion connections
Easy to see hamsters through clear plastic front
Very good cage access front door is very large
Water bottle works good
Wheel works good, but requires frequent cleaning
It would be easier to see hamsters on the lower level if the 2nd floor was made of clear plastic.
The exterior wheel can leak waste outside of the cage. Paper towels should be used below the wheel just in case it leaks. The wheel is the right size for dwarf hamsters and mice, a little bit small for Serian Hamsters.
Even though the access is good the front door does not stay open by itself and needs to be held open.
Compared to most cages on the market these disadvanages are minor. The large size and the overall good design make up for the minor shortcomings.
