Vicki L. Ward’s new book, Supercharge Your Life After 60; 10 Tips to Navigate a Dynamic Decade, delivers on its title: lots of practical advice on how to deal with the problems that develop during a decade of change. The book benefits from a positive outlook that makes the decade a time of new adventure.
Ward encourages readers to find ways to enjoy the new freedoms brought on by extra time by keeping up with friends and looking for opportunities to meet new people. “This may come as a surprise, but loneliness is believed to be rising around the world, and could have a significant effect on your health,” she writes. Local senior centers provide opportunities to meet new friends, she suggests.
In a chapter “Meet Your New Body,” Ward provides useful descriptions of the aches and pains that greet people in their sixties as well as suggestions for how to deal with those challenges. By changing your attitude toward exercise and setting a goal you can discover the pleasure of a good walk with a friend, partner or spouse.
She also includes a wealth of tips in dozens of areas for people in their 60s, ranging from planning retirement, finding senior discounts, discovering ways to make extra money, choosing retirement communities, and many more
In addition to words of wisdom from experts in the field, Ward also includes insights from interviews with people who have gone through the transition.
Kathryn, who retired early because of tendonitis, was a first frustrated by the change in her life, but turned to prayer and meditation to bring herself out of the negative feelings she had developed. She found people to help her with her housework and gardening and discovered new ways to enjoy her life. “I maintain a youthful spirit and a zest for life and new experiences. I am doing things I never thought I would be doing. I spend more time with family and good friends. I LOVE BEING 60!” she says.
People reading Supercharge Your Life After 6O will find ways to love their new age category as well.
