In some action thrillers, criminals are interchangeable with magicians or wizards; they function as if they have super powers. Rico is one such mesmerizing protagonist. He's a genetically engineered super-criminal with high intelligence and no superego to constrain him. He also trains relentlessly. Add to that his dedication to his profession – assassin – and you have the makings of a magically powerful character. Following Rico through a days' work of intimidation and mayhem is a rollicking good time.
Rico has spent his adult life employed by the omnipresent Nystrom crime syndicate, the most powerful of the four major criminal organizations in the galaxy. Now they are sending him on a mysterious new assignment. Rico makes the journey to a planet where a crucial interplanetary political leadership conference is taking place and starts looking for his contact. But it soon becomes apparent that this is no ordinary assignment. Everything is different – the secrecy of his managers, the mystery of what the assignment actually is, and for the first time ever, Rico's developing feelings for Diane, a female police officer he winds up partnering with. Gradually, a man who never had a conscience begins to comprehend why his actions have always been considered so heinous by normal people (as opposed to merely logical, as he had always believed).
Author Frank Fleming did a great job imagining his protagonist for this book. Some murderers seemingly have no conscience, so how awesome a killer could be created with futuristic bioengineering techniques? How does a person with no conscience behave? What runs through his mind? Turns out, having no superego clears the way for purely rational thought, which is liberating, if cold. And this was my one quibble with the book: being free of conscience is not the same thing as being free of emotion altogether. But Rico is a fascinating anti-hero because he is both. He actually has to force himself to appear emotional at times, in order to fit into society. But then he meets Diane and it turns out he's human after all. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his evolution from cold-blooded master of massacre to, well, … I don't want to ruin it for you. Let me just enthusiastically recommend this intelligent and entertaining book.
