Director X delivers a visually stunning movie, a new look at a know trope

Overall the plot of this movie is pretty predictable, nothing wrong with that, it’s a good take on a trope that is fun to watch. Why you watch it for is Director X to take it over the top and make every movie of this genre seem like it’s dingy with a matte finish. Everything pops off the screen, the visuals and sets are super immersive and it makes it a really fun watch.

Dialogue in this movie is a C+ with some for sure A+ one liners. You’ll get pulled out of the movie when some of the less experienced side of the cast has to carry a scene. But Michael K. Williams and Esai Morales just chew the scenery when they’re on screen.

Trevor Jackson’s turn as Priest sort of makes the movie. He’s almost the straight man, he’s unbelievably calm most of the time and when he talks you listen. His hair is like it’s own cast member with the amount of attention it gets.

TLDR; It’s Scarface meets Driver. Business is king, violence disrupts business, flashing lights and jackets tie the movie together.

Poor marketing and bad timing were two of the main culprits that crippled the potential box office success of a nearly guaranteed premise. Although the original Superfly was more known for its soundtrack than the actual movie, this was the approach taken when making this movie. Unfortunately, too much energy was seemingly put into soundtrack and taken away from the movie. Visually, the movie is stunning and it is like watching a nearly two hour long music video. Back to the soundtrack, as much as they used the music in the movie, they could of incorporated more. Even letting it tell a story within itself without taking away focus from the main plot points of the movie. If these are your type of movies to go to, the two hours are worth your time of admission.

Schon seit seinem elften Lebensjahr ist Priest Youngblood (Trevor Jackson) als Drogendealer auf den Straßen Atlantas unterwegs. Wie ein König lebt er mit seinen beiden Freundinnen Georgia und Cynthia. Nach der blutigen Auseinandersetzung mit einem Mitglied der konkurrierenden Gang Snow Patrol plant Priest den Ausstieg aus dem gefährlichen Geschäft mit einem letzten großen Coup ...

Director X (aka Julien Christian Lutz, *1975) war bisher vor allem als Regisseur von Videoclips erfolgreich - und das merkt man dem perfekt gestylten Remake des Blaxploition-Klassikers SUPERFLY (1972) auch an. So ist sein SUPERFLY weniger als Remake zu sehen, sondern vielmehr als eine gemäß dem in über 46 Jahren veränderten Zeitgeist transformierte Neuinterpretation des Originalstoffs mit einem hervorragenden, auch Parts des Original-Soundtracks von Curtis Mayfield zitierenden Rap-Soundtrack. Das vermittelte Frauenbild wirkt in Hollywoods "Me-too"-Phase angenehm antagonistisch und fern konstruierter Political Correctness. Nachdem SUPERFLY an den amerikanischen Kinokassen nicht den erhofften Erfolg hatte, verzichtete SONY auf geplante Kinostarts in Europa.

Die Blu-ray von SONY präsentiert den Film in hervorragender Bild- und Tonqualität (Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch, Japanisch in DTS-HD MA 5.1, Italienisch DD 5.1). Untertitel sind in Deutsch, Englisch (auch für HG), Arabisch, Französisch, Holländisch, Italienisch, Japanisch und Türkisch vorhanden. In den Extras (Englisch mit optionalen Untertiteln) spricht der Regisseur über seine Lieblingsszenen und über die Musik von Rapper Future für das "Hip-Hop-Remix" von SUPERFLY. Der Kinotrailer ist nicht enthalten - dafür jedoch das Musikvideo "No Shame". Die goldfarbene Amaray-Hülle ist dekorativ - verfügt aber leider über kein FSK-freies Wendecover.

Eine sehenswerte, insbesondere für ein jüngeres Publikum empfehlenswerte Neuinterpretation des Blaxploition-Klassikers. Schade, dass das 1972 aufgeführte Original seit Jahren in Deutschland nicht erhältlich ist.
