No fluff in this book. Every page is jam packed with "not so secret" herbs and teas that WILL make all the difference for the vocalist. No climbing to the top of some remote peak in the Andes to find the herb that will heal a sore throat. All the herbs are accessible and explained in great detail.
I'm crazy about this book. I carry it with me everywhere I go and refer to it constantly.
Also there's a couple lists of food supplements and foods that are beneficial. And again some of those may not work for everyone.
It covers the importance of keeping your body at a proper alkaline/acidic balance. I tend to stay on a very alkaline diet so that's not a problem for me. There's a list of alkaline and acidic foods included.
This is a book you'll want to keep with you on the road if you're a touring singer. Great reference to have.
Mr. Katz starts out the book with his personal story and then delves into specific herbs and their uses. He could have stopped there, but he then goes on to outline specific herbal formulas for various ailments: Cold and Flu, Chest and Lung, Nervousness, Insomnia, Hoarseness/ Vocal Fatigue, and Lack of Energy. He also covers using a neti pot for sinus health...something that is the "thorn in the flesh" for most singers. I was very surprised that he covered prescription Rx and how they affect the singing voice! It's helpful that my wife is a pharmacy tech, but I still look at this chapter before going to the doctor.
The next section of the book deals with natural food supplements and also healthy on the go foods for singers, as well as how to properly alkalize the body...something that is sorely needed in the US as much of the processed food we eat is very acidic. Before getting this book, I had thrown out the food guide that came with Mitch Gaylord's "Melt it Off
" DVD Series and regretted doing so. Then I found that much of that information is contained in the food section of Superior Vocal Health. The last chapter of the book is almost like an FAQ (it's titled "What do I do When?". It's a great go to point when you're having a specific problem.
Now when I go into Natur Tyme, I feel like I am stepping into the pages of Superior Vocal Health....it's almost like stepping into a Reading Rainbow episode for this book! It's so true that the human voice is the only living instrument and is affected by what we think, feel and ingest. I wish I would have had this book in college as even the basic knowledge of herbs like Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, and licorice, would have spared me much discomfort which impeded my singing at times.
I think this should be required reading for vocal students enrolled at music schools. I honestly don't know if the vocal majors I went to school with knew about all of this. I still have yet to try the Superior Vocal Health product line, but plan to in the future. Another labor of love from Vendera Publishing. Thanks Mr. Katz!!
