About the Author

Born in England and raised in Canada, John Byrne discovered superheroes through The Adventures of Superman on television. After studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design, he broke into comics first with Skywald and then at Charlton, where he created the character Rog-2000. Following his tenure at Charlton, Byrne moved to Marvel, where his acclaimed runs on The Uncanny X-Men and The Fantastic Four soon made him one of the most popular artists in the industry. In 1986 he came to DC to revamp Superman from the ground up, and since then he has gone on to draw and/or write every major character at both DC and Marvel.

So, turns out that SUPERMAN "MOS" (Vol.1) is NOT An Omnibus...It's Still a Great Buy!
I just received this new hardcover version of (DC COMICS) SUPERMAN "THE MAN OF STEEL" (VOLUME 01) today, and it is beautiful! It also seems to have great binding as well! This reprinting of these classic mid 1980's (post-crisis) stories (by legends in the comic book business John Byrne, Marv Wolfman, Jerry Ordway & Dick Giordano) are more fantastic looking than ever! And although it is NOT an Omnibus (like we all wanted & were all led to believe), it is still a great buy! It's DEFINITELY, TOTALLY WORTH THE $49.99 cover price, for everything you're getting (I'm already looking forward to Volume 02)! Anyway, If you're a Superman fan, a DC Comics fan, or just a comic book fan in general, you won't be disappointed! A+++

A very nice collection of comics. The pages are thick and crisp. The smell is like it's right of the pres. The colors are nice and vibrant. The book cover has great art as well as the book itself, with several splash views of Supes, Thisbis a must have hardback of how the modern superman came to be.

After the maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC comics history was changed. John Byrne had the difficult task to retell Superman's origin. There was a 6 issue mini series (Man of Steel) released and it was fantastic. After the great series there was an ongoing Superman title that was released. This coincided with Action Comics and Adventure of Superman. There where new friends and threats put in Superman's life. This volume consists of Man of Steel #1-6, Superman #1-4, Action Comics #584-587, Adventures of Superman #424-428, and profiles from Who's Who: Update '87. I would highly recommend picking this up.

As I'm sure fellow longtime Superman fans will agree, it is a rare thing to find an excellent run of Superman comics by the same author. There are many great one off stories, but many authors struggle to know how to write Superman. Many just can't seem to find actual threats for the Man of Steel to face, and end up writing a boring one-dimensional character flying around and punching things.
Enter John Byrne.
As the Man of Steel 6 issue mini series rebooted the Superman continuity, Byrne was able to reinvent Superman a little. He seems a little more sure of himself than past incarnations, and not quite as powerful, helping Byrne craft more suspense than previously found in Superman comics.
Simply put, this is an excellent collection of one of the best Superman runs in DC comics history, it shows a vulnerable yet capable Man of Steel, with interesting and layered villains. Byrne's art is also fantastic, and still stands out all these years later. It's nice to see that a great writer/artist actually stuck with Supes for a significant amount of time, and we finally have an omnibus to prove it.

I've never been a big Superman fan in comics, however I love adaptations like smallville Man of steel so on, so I've been meaning to read this for a while. Thankfully it lives up to the hype
Would highly recommend for this for anyone curious about Superman

Far out! Volumes 1 & 2 of the Superman: Man od Steel trade paperbacks, in one volume, hardbound, with the extra biographical information. 460-plus pages of super goodness, old school Superman. Great nostalgia for those fans who were there when the Crisi took place and saw the "rebirth' of the DCU (well the first rebirth, anyway). Great art, great storylines and cool late-80's fashions. Easy to read on no glossy paper, light to hold onto so you can read it for a long time (as I did, having just gotten it today) and totally worth it. Trade up from your paperback or digital copies. Grab some M&M's or snack food of your choice (preferably the kind that wont leave fingerprints on the pages) and enjoy!

I didn't grow up with these books so I am not looking at this through nostalgic lens. I never read a Superman comic until the Death and Return of Superman. That being said this is a really fun book! When I think of "classic Superman" this is what I think of even though this was supposed to be a modern day (modern day in the 80s) retelling of Superman's story. A highlight for me is the way John Byrne retells the story of why Krypton was destroyed. The only down side I would say is some of the dialogue is very dated but that's also part of the book's charm. A really fun read for anyone who wants a break from "dark and gritty" comics and has no political agenda to push. I've already bought volume 2 and I can't wait to dive into it!
