About the Author

Born in England and raised in Canada, John Byrne discovered superheroes through The Adventures of Superman on television. After studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design, he broke into comics first with Skywald and then at Charlton, where he created the character Rog-2000. Following his tenure at Charlton, Byrne moved to Marvel, where his acclaimed runs on The Uncanny X-Men and The Fantastic Four soon made him one of the most popular artists in the industry. In 1986 he came to DC to revamp Superman from the ground up, and since then he has gone on to draw and/or write every major character at both DC and Marvel.

John Lindley Byrne (born July 6, 1950) is a British-born American comic-book writer and artist. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on many major American superheroes. Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics’ X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise, the first issue of which featured comics' first variant cover. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He scripted the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing. In 2015, Byrne and his longtime X-Men collaborator Chris Claremont were inducted into the comic book hall of fame.

Volume 2 is another nice addition to the collection. And has a nicer (hard) cover than I expected.

Volume 2 is another nice addition to the collection. And has a nicer (hard) cover than I expected.
Was expecting the cover in the ad but it actually came with a nicer and more colorful cover. The front and back of the flap both have really nice pics, but under the flap the actual hardcover itself has cool images too that are different than the book jacket.Haven't read the book since I just got it but I flipped through it. It looks nice and the colors look vibrant and not dull. The quality of the book seems solid too, like the Vol 1 hardcover and it looks good lined up with Vol 1.

If you’re looking for good Superman stories, John Byrne doesn’t disappoint. He was the inspiration for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. A must-read series for Superman lovers!

My read of the John Byrne run of Superman in the mid 1980s continues. In this volume, Superman takes on the Fearsome Five, a space mummy, Chemo, Mr. Mxyzptlk, the TIme Trapper, Rampage, Sleez, and various other threats to humanity. As with the previous volume, Byrne had assistance by Marv Wolfman, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel, among others.

A lot of ground was broken or hauled away in this. Byrne explained the Legion of Super Heroes' place in the post-Crisis universe, went further toward establishing what a jerk Lex Luthor is, and took part in the Invasion crossover. There was also the weird thing involving Big Barda and some adult material that managed to take up two issues.

The Byrne run is in full swing and I feel like he's just scratched the surface of Superman lore to reintroduce. The relationship with Lois Lane hasn't begun yet, Braniac hasn't been reintroduced, and line wide crossovers have yet to derail what Byrne is doing.

The controlled Byrne of the Superman mythos continues. Not quite as smooth as volume 1 but still great 1980s comics.

You can't go wrong with a trade paperback with John Byrne's SUPERMAN run which is quite arguably one of the best SUPERMAN runs ever.

Very nice presentation of John Byrnes Superman. I would have been happier if the paper stock would have been heavier considering the books $50 price tag. These stories have been reprinted in trade paperback already and you're not getting any extras in this format. I am not a fan of the omnibus editions as they are extremely cumbersome if you just want to sit on a couch and read them as opposed to lining them up on a huge bookshelf. As far as the stories go, I happen to have preferred the Wolfman Ordway stories, but the Byrne ones are certainly entertaining and still hold up today. I don't consider them to be among comics greatest stories, but they are a good read in presenting a more human man of steel. The Lois and Clark series were based on the Superman charachter as presented here.

Superman Man Of Steel Volume 2.
Really enjoying this book so far (page 129 of 544). Stories continue to be told in sequential order which is great. References / recaps to stories presented in Volume 1 - you don’t have to read volume 1 first, but I’m new to this run and I’m glad I did.
Unfortunately there’s been a couple of pages with minor printing errors (see shadow effect in photos) the result is that the text and the artwork is not as clear / sharp as it should be on those pages and it is distracting and disappointing. I’ve encountered 3 pages in the 129 I’ve read so far.
No problems with Volume 1 that I can recall.
I can overlook these errors because the text is still readable and the book is enjoyable but it is worth mentioning as you do notice it when turning from a clean page to a “shadow” page and it’s not ideal for tired eyes.
If this gets an absolute treatment I’ll be upgrading for sure but these little hardcovers are easy to hold and read.
