About the Author

Born in England and raised in Canada, John Byrne discovered superheroes through The Adventures of Superman on television. After studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design, he broke into comics first with Skywald and then at Charlton, where he created the character Rog-2000. Following his tenure at Charlton, Byrne moved to Marvel, where his acclaimed runs on The Uncanny X-Men and Fantastic Four soon made him one of the most popular artists in the industry. In 1986, he came to DC to revamp Superman from the ground up, and since then he has gone on to draw and/or write every major character at both DC and Marvel.

This was a great book back from the best times of DC comics. Too bad book 4 is out of print.

It’s a great collection of the John Byrne/Wolfman/Ordway era. The collection is simply likely the best era of Superman comics post crisis. Love the fact it’s a hardcover collection. The only thing I would have liked better would have been a better paper quality.

Loved the continuation of the storyline since vol 1. I'm looking forward to Vol 4's release cause that will lead directly into the EXILE OMNIBUS. the artwork & stories, takes me back to a more simpler time when I was first reading these issues.... didn't have a care in the world

My trip through the John Byrne Superman run continues. In this volume, Superman goes up against Toyman, Braniac, the Earth Stealers, Titano, and the Manhunters, among other threats. He also tangles with Booster Gold and witnesses the fall of Gangbuster.

Most of the old favorite pieces are on the table with the introduction of Braniac. The Booster Gold crossover and The Earth Stealers are my favorite parts of this collection, possibly because it's one of the first times Dan Jurgens drew the Man of Steel and one of the last for Curt Swan.

The relationship with Lois progresses, and I'm surprised Byrne addressed Lori Lemaris since Superboy dating a mermaid is one of the silly Silver Age things I thought would never be mentioned again.

Millennium had an interesting influence on this book. I like that it lead to team-ups with Spectre and Green Lantern but all of Smallville's kids being Manhunter sleeper agents was a little out there. I wonder if it was a contributing factor to Byrne leaving the book the following year.

The Byrne run is nearing completion. I wonder if Byrne was running out of steam at this point, though.

This is a good read. I'd have given it five stars but there's a gap in the issues that were part of the millennium storyline. Batman appears in Action Comics annual #1. Booster Gold makes an appearance in an issue.
