Editorial Reviews

Review

"Byrne deserves credit for ending his run well. A masterpiece of a story, its consequences would ripple through the next year of the Superman titles." -- Julian Darius

"Jerry Ordway is the unsung hero of the Superman team." --
Jake Franklin

"Roger Stern [is] probably the best super-hero writer of the 80's and 90's." --
Paul Greer

"From 1986 to around 1993, the Superman titles were the most consistently well-written comics around." --
Matt Hawes

"As controversial as Byrne's final story was, it led to some wonderful stories which seriously examined the decision made by Superman." --
Sean Hogan

"Getting as much of the Post-Crisis era of Superman into collected edition is important ...we've been very fortunate with the collections that have come out recently and I want to see that luck continue." --
Michael Bailey

"[The] Stern-written chapters were always top-notch. Here's the awesome thing about Roger Stern ... I never noticed his name .... he didn't have the tropes that made me think "Who wrote this?" [He] let the characters take center stage. But one day, I looked at my collection and noticed that I had a LOT of Roger Stern-written comics, and that with very few exceptions, I unabashedly loved them all." --
Duy Tano

"DC's finally giving us the final volume of John Byrne's 1980s run on Superman. I'd love to see this series keep going with the next wave of creative teams, which included folks like Jerry Ordway, Roger Stern, Dan Jurgens, and Kerry Gammill, among others. The whole 'Gangbuster' storyline that bridges the gap between the end of Byrne's run and the 'Exile' storyline (where George Perez briefly joined the fold) made for some solid reading, too." --
Andrew W. Farago

About the Author

Born in England and raised in Canada, John Byrne discovered superheroes through The Adventures of Superman on television. After studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design, he broke into comics first with Skywald and then at Charlton, where he created the character Rog-2000. Following his tenure at Charlton, Byrne moved to Marvel, where his acclaimed runs on The Uncanny X-Men and Fantastic Four soon made him one of the most popular artists in the industry. In 1986, he came to DC to revamp Superman from the ground up, and since then he has gone on to draw and/or write every major character at both DC and Marvel.

Jerry Ordway has been writing, drawing, and painting comic books professionally since 1980 - specifically on such titles as ALL-STAR SQUADRON, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, SUPERMAN, POWER OF SHAZAM, WildStar, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Tom Strong, WONDER WOMAN, The Messenger, and Proton.

Roger Stern has written for radio, television, the stage, and the Internet. For ten years, he was the senior writer of the Superman series, and has written hundreds of stories about such diverse characters as Green Lantern, Supergirl, Starman, and the Justice League for DC Comics; and Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and the Avengers for Marvel. His first prose novel, The Death and Life of Superman, was a New York Times bestseller.

I keep getting prompted to review this book which hasn't been released yet. I'll assume it's probably good but really have no idea.

Superman:Man of Steel volume four, is a great read from the John Byrne era. Well written and illustrated. Some pages were problematic in that my kindle couldn't enlarge the images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories, wonderful collection
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 31, 2022
This is a great collection, and it's really excellent to finally have these stories in a readily available collection, at last. This, and the other 3 volumes, contain some of the most iconic Superman stories of all time, by well known artists and writers such as Marv Wolfman, George Perez and, of course, John Byrne.

In the book are some staggering highs, some fun stories, and some tragic tales. Be forewarned: The four-part story, The Supergirl Saga, towards the end is incredibly depressing and nearly ends the entire collection, so be prepared to shed tears given how dark that tale can get.

The artwork is mostly good across the board, except some minor outliers such as the ugly Mike Mignola art. Tastes will vary, and his work in other comics such as Cosmic Odyssey and, of course, Hellboy is fine, but in a Superman comic it looks very off and 'wrong' in many spots.

Overall I recommend this entire collection from volumes 1-4, especially for anyone wanting to start reading Superman books and get a real feel for the character and his supporting cast. I hope there can be at least a volume 5 of this Man of Steel collection. The revolutionary 80s run collected here continues to inspire new incarnations of the character, and it's great to revisit the classics.
