The stunning debut novel from one of the most creative artists of our generation, Bobby Hall, a.k.a. Logic.
“Bobby Hall has crafted a mind-bending first novel, with prose that is just as fierce and moving as his lyrics. Supermarket is like Naked Lunch meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest—if they met at Fight Club.”—Ernest Cline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Ready Player One
Flynn is stuck—depressed, recently dumped, and living at his mom’s house. The supermarket was supposed to change all that. An ordinary job and a steady check. Work isn’t work when it’s saving you from yourself. But things aren’t quite as they seem in these aisles. Arriving to work one day to a crime scene, Flynn’s world collapses as the secrets of his tortured mind are revealed. And Flynn doesn’t want to go looking for answers at the supermarket. Because something there seems to be looking for him. A darkly funny psychological thriller, Supermarket is a gripping exploration into madness and creativity. Who knew you could find sex, drugs, and murder all in aisle nine?

The plot devices used in this book was Macguffin, and Deus Ex Machina. Macguffin was used at the end as a helpful unexpected ending. Multiple objects were used to bring the plot to a resolution. Deus Ex Machina is also used because the problem was unexpectedly solved. Deus Ex Machina and Macguffin worked hand and hand in this book.
I did enjoy this novel. Like I previously stated I was shocked and got emotionally invested in this book. There are lots of turns and plot twists that will leave you wanting to read more. The characters get you invested, and curiosity keeps you reading. I enjoyed all the characters and the way the book was set up. I really enjoyed the breaking of the fourth wall that was done frequently.
I would recommend this book. In fact, I have recommended it. If you like mysteries this book is such a good choice. It’s hard to explain why I recommend it without spoiling it, but the plot twist will leave your jaw dropped.
Overall, this book gets an 8.5/10 and that is just because I had to read this book for school. The book is short but so good and I highly recommend.
I loved it, and I will admit I come in biased, since Logic is one of my all time favorite artists. But that did not change that I was hooked, and read this in a little under 2 days. I will be re-reading one time just to see the clues along the way (this time knowing what they all mean). And on my re-read I will be listening to the soundtrack at the same time, getting the full experience.
Chapters were perfectly descriptive without being overbearing (trying not to give away spoilers).
Strongly recommend this book. Would love to see this become a film.
I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did.
It was so good I finished the whole thing in 7 hours over the span of two days.
I came away from the book thinking that Logic / Bobby Hall is such a relatable guy who just wants to help people (this really shows in the Acknowledgements section of the book).
Maybe for me it's because I also love Mac DeMarco and Alan Watts (and am a white dude who also has a rap album haha), and he mentions them both in the book; but oh man I have never in my life connected to an author like this.
It's been a long time since I've laughed while reading a book or thought "holy shit! The author actually published that?!?!" (You'll know what I'm talking about if/when you read it haha).
His knowledge of, or rather, ability to explain anxiety is unreal. I've dealt with a lot of it personally after a interestingly rough/rewarding year of AmeriCorps service in a Homeless Shelter based in a small town of roughly 10,000 people, and I can't even begin to explain how accurate he was in describing what derealization feels like in addition to the other thoughts/anxieties that come across your mind when experiencing something like that.
While Bobby may not use the most eloquent language to convey what he is trying to get across, I really do think the book has quite a bit of value that it could provide to someone that is dealing with anxiety or hopelessness.
Do yourself a favor and read this book.
(Also the guy made an album ABOUT THE BOOK. Literally, I think he might be the first person ever to make a soundtrack to a book. Maybe I'm wrong, but either way it's still awesome).
Im about to give an honest answer of what I thought about this book.
The only real big con is the writing at the first part of the book. It's really eh. Every other review that spoke negatively would tell you the same thing.
"The writing is bad, its like a 6th grader wrote it!"
I won't gloss over the fact that the writing could be improved, but we need to stop glossing over the fact that the plot and the story is absolutely captivating. The world he builds is really amazing.
Bobby's struggles with writing are told in the perspective of Flynn which was really intreserting to see. He really showcased what a mad artist is like. Characters could've been better and have more depth but other than that it was overall a really good book.
The only thing that didn't make it a 5/5 was the writing. But you could tell bobby improved by part 2.
Logic if your reading this,
Keep making novels.
You have some serious potential. With some shaping up I believe you can write a book that'll make me give a 5 star review.
Overall, the writing in this book is great. Mr. Hall breaks the fourth wall in a way that doesn't feel uncomfortable, or scripted. He does so in a way that feels very natural and entertaining. The dialogue feels about as natural as possible among people in the age range of the characters, and it fits well in the message of the story. Once you were sucked into the book, it was nearly impossible to put down.
There were times where the perspectives in the story were hard to follow. I found myself having to re-read a paragraph or two over to follow where I was. That was also a positive for me though too. The book is cerebral. It forces you to think, but not to overthink.
I would honestly recommend this book to anyone. Though I think it may hit home with people who are fans of dark themed thrillers like Fight Club. This work could easily become labelled as a cult classic with a following like Fight Club.
This book is bad. This book is really bad. In the acknowledgments Bobby says that he binge-read a bunch of novels for the first time in his twenties and then just decided to write his own. It shows. I was actually kind of surprised he had ever read a novel. Bobby’s prose is horrific. I’m sorry but he doesn’t know how to write, and it seems that he’s attracted a lot of people who don’t read, but just like his music. I could predict the ending a third of the way through the book. The characters are somewhat nuanced, but the way they are characterized is awful. He sticks to weird movie and tv show stereotypes. From what I can tell Flynn is based off Bobby himself, except without any musical talent, which is odd, because Flynn spends a lot of time talking about what type of music he likes but as far as I can tell never mentions a book or author he likes. I think Bobby should take that as a hint that he should stick to rapping. Literally every single author who’s ever given writing advice says that the most important thing you need to do is read a lot. A week does not cut it. A week of reading books will not fix Bobby’s painful prose or blindingly obvious foreshadowing or lack of plot. Bobby spends all his time trying to be artistic, with cringey fourth wall breaks and flashbacks and flash forwards that just don’t work. Inexperienced readers might look at that and think it’s pure literary brilliance, but anybody who’ve actually read a few books will just find it disgusting.
If you’re reading this Bobby you should stop. Stop writing novels. You’re getting a lot of credit for terrible work because your rap fans decided to support you. I guarantee you most of them didn’t really enjoy reading your book that much, or if they did they just liked that you made your character so relatable by including some popular bands and life as a minimum wage worker at a grocery store. I’ll give you that, your description of working in a supermarket is pretty accurate. Even with all that I don’t think most of your readers even finished the book. Look at the reviews, even in most of the glowing ones the reviewers say they’re only part of the way through the book. I’ve read my fair share of book reviews and have never seen anybody write a review when they’re part way through a book unless it was a terrible book they couldn’t finish.
This is not a good book. I just want that to be on record somewhere, because almost everything else I see is purely delusional.
Edit: do not let the bad reviews of this book hold you back from reading it. It is genius. Completely genius and so well written; I don’t care what level of vocabulary you have or how learned you are, how refined or not you are, it’s a genuinely lovely book.
