Supervision Essentials for Psychodynamic Psychotherapies (Clinical Supervision Essentials) 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Relational psychodynamic psychotherapy arose in reaction to hierarchical, doctor-patient aspects of Freudian psychoanalysis. It emphasizes instead the partnership between therapist and client, and a conscious focus on the power dynamics involved in this inherently unequal relationship. In this book, Joan E. Sarnat describes a dynamic approach to clinical supervision that is based upon this therapeutic approach. While some clinicians treat the supervisory relationship as entirely distinct from therapy, Sarnat presents a straightforward and ethical framework within which a supervisor uses his or her clinical skills to help supervisees navigate their responses to their work with clients.

Clear, concise chapters cover the theoretical and empirical basis for a relational model of supervision, and offer specific recommendations for addressing typical problems related by beginning, intermediate, and advanced supervisees. The book also includes revealing transcripts and analyses of the author's supervisory sessions with real trainees, including the trainee in the author's companion DVD, Relational Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Supervision. Comprehensive yet straightforward, this guide is intended for new and longtime supervisors alike, as well as clinical supervisees seeking a conceptual and practical understanding of this essential relationship.

“Psychodynamic psychologists―especially those supervising trainees who are also working psychodynamically―will find Sarnat’s Supervision Essentials for Psychodynamic Psychotherapies to be a useful guide to developing or refining a more relational approach to their supervision.” ―PsycCRITIQUES®

From the Back Cover

These include challenges associated with racial and ethnic differences as well as legal and ethical issues that occasionally arise in supervision. Practical matters including documentation, and the format and timing of evaluations, are discussed. The book also includes revealing transcripts and analyses of the author's supervisory sessions with real trainees, including those documented in the author's companion DVD [title.] Comprehensive yet straightforward, this guide is intended for new and longtime supervisors alike, as well as clinical supervisees seeking a conceptual and practical understanding of this essential relationship.

Joan Sarnat's work on psychodynamic supervision and relational psychoanalytic supervision has set the standard for a generation of practitioners and instructors. Her recent book is marvelous for its depth and breadth of knowledge of relational psychoanalytic scholarship, its clarity, and especially for the warmth and intimacy Dr. Sarnat is able to convey in the clinical supervision vignettes that bring the book to life. Among the many ways in which her clinical wisdom enriches this book, her consideration of the teach-treat dilemma/controversy in psychodynamic supervision offers a thoughtful and ethically responsible way to undo this false binary and relax anxieties about personal and interpersonal reflections for both supervisee and supervisor. I am dazzled by what a valuable resource she has given us--both as learners and as supervisors--one that surely offers much to the new supervisor (as well as ones of us who have been around for a while) and to supervisee.

Dr Joan Sarnat is a recognized authority in the field of psychoanalytic supervision having written and lectured extensively on the subject for over twenty years. In this monograph she lays out in lucid and precise prose her vision and revision of the theory and practice of supervision. She convincingly shows the power of a supervisory relationship that is not hierarchical and that allows space for the uncertainties, personal biases, and countertransferences of the supervisor as well as the clinician.
From her extensie transcripts we can see that she walks the walk when it comes to directing supervisors to create a climate that is non-shaming, open, and free of defensiveness. In this atmosphere the supervisor and supervisee can optimally explore the clinical material and a clinician who is less experienced or struggling with difficult material has room to grow and master that material.
The book left me wishing that Dr Sarnat could supervise my work! I also really admire her very economical and exacting prose style.
I highly recommend the book to supervisors and supervisees alike.

Dr. Sarnat is a gem. In this and other writings, she has taken up the topic of psychodynamic supervision with a refreshingly honest and open attitude. Deeply intelligent, impressively clear and emotionally vulnerable, Dr. Sarnat shares her extensive supervisory experience through the inclusion of many supervisory vignettes and the clear analysis of them. Her readers, like her lucky supervisees, are guided into the complex world of clinical supervision by her steady hand and there we gain access to an attitude that will help us become more attuned, open, and effective supervisors. This important topic should receive as much attention as our other clinical endeavors and I'm appreciative to Dr. Sarnat for guiding the way. Kudos!

Sarnat's book offers a different way of conceptualizing supervision than many of us, who are in the field, have experienced. Using clear, none-jargony language, Sarnat offers a model of supervision that reflects, mirrors and models relational psychotherapy. The book offers both conceptual as well as practical ideas about how to handle various issues that come up in the supervisory relationship. It is useful both for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts. As a clinician and supervisor of many years, I found it very helpful in conceptualizing how to bring my clinical sensibilities to my supervising work. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is either a beginning or an experienced supervisor.
