First off, this game isn't for the faint of heart. It is a complex strategy game and I shiver to think of what it would be like to play against other people who are good at it. But I digress, it is a tough game, but that is its draw. There is so much stuff to do and try. Vast, naval battles, or maybe air battles, or perhaps you like hitting the enemy with long range artillery or missiles? There are nukes, carpet bombing, shields, nuke defenses, etc... Then the best stuff, experimentals, basically a tough to build units that just own everything. I always liked being the Cybran and building a few mega spiders and then some of the experimental airships. Nothing could stop me! :)
Anywho, the community is still going strong and there are a lot of great mods out there. Any RTS buff or even just a SCI FI buff should have this game. It is cheap right now and a total blast! I bought a copy for my brother so we can play online and beat down the AI! :)
The scale of the game is huge. First, the maps are enormous. You can have huge armies, many things are going on at once. You can scroll all the way in to a single unit, or all the way out to a full map, all smooth, all functional. The mini-map is interactive, and if you have multiple screens, this game will plop the map on the extra screens and allow those to be used for commands just like the main screen. This is the first RTS I've ever played that used more than one screen so well.
The units are very fun to play, but perhaps the most useful is that you can pre-determine which units CAN be used, and which CAN'T be used. This allows you to play fun games, without having to deal with "game-ending" units.
Nukes are ACTUAL nukes. They wipe out entire sections of the maps, and sinse some of these maps are 80 Kilometers wide, the devastation is quite fun to watch.
Graphics are great, balance is great, AI's are smart. Look up videos of gameplay, this game is truly amazing. The story is pretty awesome too.
Highly recommend for you and your friends. Funner with more people.
Furthermore, there is a unique campaign for each of the three main races in Supreme Commander while the expansion, Forged Alliance, features a single campaign that changes in various ways depending on which of the three main factions you choose to play. The fourth faction in Forged Alliance is only playable in multiplayer and skirmish battles. Both games feature large scale battles involving hundreds, and potentially thousands, of units - including colossal experimental units that can at times literally rampage through several hundred lesser units - which is always a blast to watch.
Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance both feature impressive replay value. Firstly, you can play through each faction's campaign. While each campaign is only six missions, these missions can take several hours to complete at times - with the campaign missions in Forged Alliance feeling particularly epic in scope. Furthermore, there is a skirmish mode included in both games, which allows you to have sandbox game play against the AI. Lastly, Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance feature excellent multiplayer support, and the games include an interface for multiplayer gaming called GPGNet which allows for easy matchmaking and chat.
In short, if you're looking for a good sci-fi themed RTS that focuses more on strategic than tactical game play, look no further - Supreme Commander and it's expansion Forged Alliance will deliver. With both great games packed into a single Gold Edition package for a low price, I highly recommend trying out Supreme Commander: Gold Edition.
AMENDMENT, August 29, 2013:
THQ is alas no more, and GPG Net has also gone the way of the dodo. However, some copies of Supreme Commander: Gold Edition can be registered by their CD-Keys via the 3rd party digital distribution platform, Steam, which retains a match-making feature should you wish to engage in multi-player. This registration does not cost you a dime, but adds both games in the package to your Steam Library. For this to work, your CD-Key must be in an XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX format, ie: 20 alpha-numeric characters in groups of four, separated by dashes. Enjoy!
