I've always had some trouble with regular ear buds (like music ones) hurting my ears so I went for the small, instead of the medium, which is for "average" folks they stated. They are a perfect fit. The medium, I think, would have hurt my ears. (I'm a Caucasian woman, on the thin side, for a reference point.)
These go in so easily (not like the stupid foams ones that you have to roll up and shove in quickly and hope it seals, only to do a crappy job anyway)! And the outer part of the ear bud fits perfectly into my ear, securing it into place. There is no way to have these not in far enough or in too far. They are perfect.
I did not know what size to get until I went to Surefire's website I thought the size referred to the plug itself (the part that goes into the ear canal) the size actually refers the height of your ears concha bowl which holds the outer earpiece in place.
Small = Concha bowl height less than 1"
Medium = Concha bowl height 1"
Large = Concha boal height larger than 1"
Medium fits most people.
Buy a couple of pairs.
update 4/18/14: i have milked the life of these plugs out to about a year, give or take. after that long they start to lose their pliability and thus their effectiveness. but i have since replaced them with new versions of the same thing. and will probably continue to do so. i do have one area of improvement for these. in the food industry, it is now largely a requirement for earplugs to be metal detectable. that would (again) make these workplace approved.
Went from Surefire EP3s to these EP5s. The noise protection indoors is significantly better in comparison with the EP3s, all Surefire plugs work great outdoors. The same level of comfort you expect from Surefire plugs.
I work around 110+ dB environment. It cuts out enough sound to make working pleasant. You can still hear people talking and hear whats going on around you.
F16's and F/A18's taking off a mile or so away is so loud without ear plugs. This makes it so you seldom have to cover your ears.
Loud Diesel motors are also dulled out quite a bit so you can hear yourself think.
I have larger ear canals (left slightly larger in diameter than my right) (purchased the Large) *make sure you measure your ear size
So the seal isnt quite as good in my left.
These stay clean because they're a 'jelly' like material and just wipe off grease, HAZMAT, dirt etc from inserting/removing them with dirty hands/gloves.
If I wanted a better seal I might have gone with the foam variant. (but those trap dirt, grime)
*******Just make sure you put them in properly
