When the Jesuit theologian Henri de Lubac published Surnaturel in 1946, he irrevocably altered the Thomist understanding of grace. Even more, he changed Thomism itself, which now gives Thomas priority of place over his later commentators by embedding him in the patristic tradition he knew so well. Finally, and most crucially, man is now seen as inherently open to the supernatural. No longer is grace seen as topping out nature, like icing atop a layer cake. Unfortunately, de Lubac had made his case so convincingly that problems soon followed in his overpowering wake. After Vatican II, grace came to be seen as so intrinsic to man that the supernatural gifts of revelation, the Church, and the sacraments seemed, at best, merely symbolic reminders of an already realized redemption. Clearly the time has come, after the doldrums of the post-Vatican II Church, for a reassessment of Surnaturel, magnificently supplied here in this fascinating collection of essays by noted Carmelite, Dominican, Jesuit and lay scholars. Every chapter displays the art of the medieval disputatio to thrilling effect. Insightful Set of Essays

This book is the publishing of a symposium held in 2000 on the controversy of de Lubac's surnaturel. Consequently, the book is a set of essays and some are written by those who are sympathetic with de Lubac and others are written by those who would offer some criticism. The common spirit of these essays is the appreciation of what de Lubac has done for contemporary Thomism. There are four parts to this book with 3 or 4 essays a part.

Part I: On de Lubac's Surnaturel
This section provides two essays introducing Surnaturel both in content and in historical context, and two which deal with the book's reception by Thomists.

Part II: Nature and the Supernatural in Thomas Aquinas
This section aims to go through the texts of Thomas in order to compare de Lubac's own reading of Thomas. This is highlighted by an excellent study by Jean-Pierre Torrell on nature and grace in Thomas.

Part III:Scholastic Developments
Here are three essays which aim to understand better the historical process which lead from Thomas to the modern separation of nature and grace. This includes an essay on Ockham, another on pure nature, and finally one on the Salmanticenses, the Thomistic Carmelite theologians of the 17th century.

Part IV: The Question of the Supernatural Today
Finally, here are four essays which show how this question is relevant today.

Taking everything into account this is a book well worth reading for those who are interested in the nature-grace debates. It is clear that while de Lubac was a great figure of the past century he was not an infallible historian. The Toulusian School of Thomism here aims to build on and correct the historical work of de Lubac in order to fulfill what de Lubac himself wanted in this instance - a true reading of the texts of Thomas over against a false Thomism which is far from the texts.

Really, de Lubac was a genius, and he did so much to liberate Catholic thought from the old manual Thomism. If someone like Bonino wants to take us back to the darkest period of Catholic theological barbarism, fine; but can't he first actually master de Lubac's arguments before he attacks them?
