I was never a "waffle maker" before trying this mix, so don't let inexperience deter you. I followed the directions EXACTLY as they appeared on the box...my waffles were perfect! The mix looked a little thin/watery initially, but after waiting the instructed 5 min, it thickened up nicely.
The item arrived timely with Saturday delivery (which I thought was great since it was food I ordered!). High quality packaging--vacuum sealed for freshness so NO PRESERVATIVES required (loved learning this!!)--feels like a brick, but just cut the bag open and break up the contents--you'll notice the wonderful ingredients of flax, nuts and vanilla right away!
Don't let the "healthy" turn you off...this stuff is great tasting. My kids LOVE it. We bought this several weeks ago, and we've been eating it weekly ever since--without any guilt. So easy, so yummy!
I'm going to order the recommended waffle iron-im totally sold on making waffles now--so easy!! this is easier (and healthier) than pancakes, and the clean up is a breeze.
My family loves them!
What an absolutely delicious product! Bravo to Surprisingly Vegan! I'm looking forward to your next product!!
PS: you don't need to be vegan or have gluten allergy to enjoy this!
I used it to make pancakes and it worked well. However, I liked the pancakes a lot more when I used almond milk instead of plain water. UPDATE - Actually I tried Hemp milk the other day and it works a lot better, less runny.
Otherwise, be sure to follow the instructions clearly. Let the mix stand 5 minutes and then test it. It has to be medium thick (but not glue thick). It cannot be runny or your pancakes will be a mess. I found (with almond milk) that 1+1/8 cups was not enough, so I added a little more.
I used coconut oil spray on a medium heat skillet. After I pour the mix, I redistribute and shape the pancake with a forward-back motion. Be sure to cover the pan and cook 3 1/2 minutes on each side. 3 1/2 x2 for a total of 7 minutes is the magic number.
Last, make sure to keep stirring the mix with a spoon, the batter tends to settle towards the bottom so you need to stir it to keep the same thickness.
I decided to order this product because a vegan friend of mine made me these waffles for breakfast and I was surprised by how satisfying and fluffy they were. Nevermind that I smeared some butter on them. And drizzled the top with maple syrup. These are an actually good vegan, gluten-free substitute. Plus, the ingredients are few and wholesome, so while you get your sweet treat fix you're still eating a healthy meal. (Again, nevermind my love for butter and syrup.)
Also, they're REALLY easy to make and the box's instructions could not be more accurate. I don't know how these would turn out in a Belgian waffle maker but I use the Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker and the waffles cook up in the exact time specified on the box, 7-8 minutes.
These waffles aren't cheap but considering the ingredients are expensive -- gluten-free oats, walnuts, flaxseed, coconut palm nectar, vanilla beans -- I think it's fairly priced.
I hadn't made waffles in so long that I had to buy a waffle maker when I first ordered this mix. I bought an inexpensive Oster "Dura-Ceramic Belgian waffle maker" from Target. The Amazon reviews should have warned me away, as a number of reviewers complained that it didn't get hot enough. That waffle maker simply didn't work with this mix. Even after cooking double time, the waffles remained wet in the middle. However, the staff at Surprisingly Vegan suggested a Cuisinart Classic Round waffle maker. I bought one from Amazon, and it works perfectly. I'm very pleased overall.
