This is the fourth in Salem's "Survey of Social Science" series, following sets on economics, psychology, and sociology that were published in 1991, 1993, and 1994, respectively. The 342 articles here cover politics, history of government and politics, political philosophy, functions of government, state and local government, economic issues, law, religion and government, civil rights, comparative government, international politics, and more. Emphasizing North America, particularly the United States, the lengthy entries offer an overview of the topic, definitions of major terms, applications, context (historical, geographical, philosophical), and brief bibliographies. A glossary defines about 500 terms. The 190 contributors are academics, as is the consulting editor; series editor Magill is a well-known editor of reference books. This work has been successfully designed for general readers, undergraduates, and nonspecialists. Currently the only comprehensive encyclopedia for the field, it provides a valuable foundation for general knowledge or student papers in political science through easy-to-understand language and careful explanation. The Encyclopedia of Government and Politics (Routledge, 1992), edited by Mary Hawkesworth and Maurice Kogan, is a more selective general encyclopedia for a more sophisticated audience.
