"Debut author Bellin weaves a bleak postapocalyptic tale of survival against overwhelming odds, centering around an amnesiac teenager who plays a pivotal role in his colony’s attempt to stay alive." (Publishers Weekly)
An amnesiac struggles to make sense of his place in a war-ravaged world where small bands of human survivors scramble to stay one step ahead of a menacing, body-snatching threat. (Kirkus Reviews)
"Tantalizing mysteries abound among the human and inhuman inhabitants of the bleak landscape, and the postapocalyptic plot is satisfyingly full of twists." (Booklist)
"Survival Colony 9 will appeal to sci-fi fans who will anxiously await the planned sequel." (School Library Journal)
"This cautionary tale is filled with interesting plot twists, compelling characters, and gripping action. Fans of dystopian thrillers should find the conflicted protagonist’s story thought-provoking as he discovers his identity, establishes a new family, and finds hope in his desolate environment." (VOYA)
“Joshua David Bellin brings serious game in a post-apocalyptic thriller that collides breathless action with devious world building and genuine heart. A terrific novel!” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of ROT & RUIN and V-WARS)
"Set in a gritty post-apocalyptic world, SURVIVAL COLONY 9 is both an adventure and an exploration of what it means to be human. This debut novel made me feel almost as desperate to find out the secret behind Querry Genn’s existence as he felt. And what a surprise when everything was revealed!" (Margaret Peterson Haddix, author of The Missing Series)
About the Author
Joshua David Bellin has been writing novels since he was eight years old (though the first few were admittedly very short). He taught college for twenty years, wrote a bunch of books for college students, then decided to return to writing fiction. SURVIVAL COLONY NINE is his first novel, but the sequel's already in the works!

This book is not a thriller or a fast paced novel, but the story questions kept me turning the pages to find out what the heck was going on.
Other than the dirt and grime found on every page of the story, this is a very clean read with no sex or foul language. There's a little violence but not much. Teenagers of any age would enjoy this book, and adults who are fans of YA books and dystopian books will enjoy it as well.
**spoiler alert** Don't keep reading this review if you haven't already read the book! **spoiler alert**
The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because I had trouble believing a couple of the plot elements: 1) I couldn't believe the entire colony would just go along with Laman's plan to incorporate Querry as Laman's son. I would think that at least one of the children would let the secret slip that Querry was not really Laman's son. 2) I didn't believe Querry could follow the Skaldi's trail for so long considering how the previous chapters talked about how much the wind constantly blew the dust across the land.
But despite those minor issues, I still loved the book!
Bellin's writing was a pleasure to read throughout the book with some wonderful descriptive lines like:
"As soon as they were gone the sun resumed its work, baking the land, leeching the veins of water that formed in the ground's cracks, crinkling the river like a scrap of paper in a fire."
"Her face might be a stone, I thought, but even stones get worn down in time."
Great job Bellin! I look forward to your next book.
A novel by Joshua David Bellin
Awakened in the middle of the night, 14-year-old Querry packs his tent and belongings and gets ready to run away again. He and the 51 others that make up the colony move nomadically across a war torn landscape in search of safety, food and water. Mankind fought that last great war over the dwindling resources available from the planet-wide drought caused by global warming. They are also running from the Scaldi, an alien race that preys on the remnants of humanity, those few that managed to survive the great conflict that destroyed civilization. But there is dissent among the colonists that moves closer to rebellion every day. And that could destroy them all.
“Survival Colony 9” draws you into a mystery filled dystopian world. Who, or what, are the Scaldi? Who is Querry really? Who is infected? Who is loyal? There are a lot of moving parts to the plot including the de rigueur budding YA romance and perhaps a bit too much mystery. While well written, it lacks a sense of urgency, particularly in the early chapters. And, although I did enjoy it, this isn’t a novel that will fire your imagination and have you thirsting for more.
I recommend this novel only to those patient readers, who enjoy a slowly building mystery.
There's something else that's done terrifically well in this story, and I'm not talking about the pacing, which will having you falling over yourself to turn the pages faster. No, I'm talking about the aliens.
Yes, if things weren't bad enough for Querry and his fellow colonists, some race of alien baddies is picking off these few human survivors one by one, and let me tell you, the Skaldi are good aliens. Not good like nice, I mean they are good bad guys. I don't want to give anything away but I can add the Skaldi to the list of things that will probably pop up in my nightmares at some point and when they do, I will pretty much never sleep again. They are menacing, mysterious, and creepy as heck.
Did I mention that Querry is carrying a secret? And the people he relies on are keeping a secret from him? Way to crank the tension up even more.
Yeah, Querry's got his work cut out for him. You'd better read this to find out if he makes it.
A stand-out book, a stand-out hero. SURVIVAL COLONY 9 is literary quality sci-fi thriller.
Just take this bit of advice: keep a bottle of water nearby because this book will make you thirsty. Also I suggest reading with all the lights on. I'm telling you, those Skaldi, man.
