Disclosure: I was provided an electronic copy of this book for a blog tour.

I’ll start this review with what I would normally say at the end. Upon finishing Mr. Hogwood’s book, I immediately ordered a hard copy version. I could have easily printed the PDF provided, but 1.) I felt that the time, effort and expertise put into creating this handbook WELL merited my money. 2.) I want to have a compact, easy-to-carry version available for reference.

First, don’t let the page count discourage you. When I received my copy, I groaned. 350 pages on Survival Groups? Can’t this fit into 30? Trust me when I say that there’s not a wasted word in the handbook, and that’s coming from a writer known to waste a word or two—here and there. With that said, you can’t expect to read this in one sitting. It’s 1.) Too important of a topic. 2.) Covers every aspect of survival group dynamics you can imagine. This book needs to be read in stages and sections, giving you time to reflect on the subjects presented

Survival group basics and dynamics are an often-overlooked topic in the readiness discussion. Naturally, we gravitate toward gathering gear and preparing our environment for disaster. It’s more immediate and you can easily measure your progress. But if you think about it, you’ll always be in a group, whether it’s with family, friends or neighbors. The principles in this book apply to all of these groups, tailored for each of them…and Mr. Hogwood goes far beyond that to prepare you for larger, more purposeful survival groups.

Here are some of the concepts addressed…I stress the word SOME. There’s a wealth of information and reinforced ideas.

This is a serious and lengthy book for those who ate serious about putting together a sustainable survival group capable of weathering the worst of disasters.
We would all like to think that we know enough; that "common sense" will see us, and those we love, through any situation.
But if common sense was all that common - we would never be in a TEOTWAWKI situation to begin with.
This book covers those bases that might be missing, or not so common.

This excellent book is meant to give those concerned about the uncertain future a blueprint on how to navigate the issues that befall a group trying to survive. Few books take into account the group dynamics that are part and parcel of such a setting, yet it will be the main reason for your success (or failure) in times of trouble. Mr. Hogwood, a man who has walked the walk and as well as talked the talk, guides you through just about every problem your family or group would have to work through to survive, and give you the best chance to thrive. Two thumbs up!

I buy these types of books to keep up on the latest. First on me.. I am a person who used to think mad max was inevitable. I have since refined my views and realized that society is to strong for such things (bar-ing and EMP or Solar flare). I think that localized disasters with law enforcement being too burdened protecting valuable infrastructure to patrol areas is a possibility. Limited duration, localized lawlessness is a distinct possibility. So for an armed neighborhood watch of sorts, perhaps. I also think that there is a small limited possibility that in some future point (within my lifetime), there could be a martial law thus civil strife maybe even some kind of insurrection. Small chance though. I do not think there is going to be an imminent martial law in the next couple of months lead out by some communist takeover and disarming americans by putting us in fema camps. Not likely, and no way. I watch the militarization of police with alarm, just as I do the ever encroachment upon civil liberties, but our country is still a Republic and it does operate (still) as such. We the people hire and fire our elected representatives at various levels of government. They can hire and fire corrupt and abusive police, and so our system works but it has various flaws. I don't think it will be a dictatorship anytime soon. The boys in blue are, for the most part, there to protect and serve and in my area are very respectful, and professional. There is a growing gap, but that is our fault as a people. The cops are still our neighbors and are very very gun friendly. Now on to the book. This book has the needed info to corral your neighbors into a band of temporary guards, should a lack of law and order transpire for a given situation. This text is good for that.Read more ›

As a committed prepper, I read a lot because I am always interested in learning more. I'm a fan of prepper fiction because it is entertaining, instructive and an excellent method of bringing non-preppers into the fold. But there comes a time when you need to get down to the business of preparedness. The Survival Group Handbook is an essential part of our Preparedness Library at Freedom Preppers.

The Survival Group Handbook was of particular personal interest because it deals with the single biggest issue of concern for us ... Prepper Group versus Lone Wolf Prepper. I have read dozens of survival guides and all stress the same point: "You can't go it alone ... there is strength in numbers ... the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." Charley Hogwood deals with this subject in great detail through his detailed analysis of concerns to Preppers and his concept of M.A.G.'s, a Mutual Assistance Group for survival.

I strongly recommend The Survival Group Handbook. I urge you to purchase a hard copy as it will be an excellent reference manual when the lights go out ... permanently!
