UPDATE: After using this book as a reference for several issues just to see if what it states holds up I have to remove 2 stars. Not for a lack of information because it definitely has lots of useful information. My reason for removing a star is because after some actual real life use of the information found on these pages I don't believe that this is an all inclusive book for survival medicine. It has way too many topics that it will point you in the right direction but it doesn't follow through with that information. It is definitely missing some vital bits of information on specific topics. Take the sections on herbal remedies and using essential oils. Sure it will tell me what to use and where to use it but it's missing the how or how much. Don't tell me to mix an essential oil with a carrier oil and forget to tell me how much essential oil to mix with how much carrier oil. Don't tell me to use clove oil for a toothache but fail to tell me how to make a usable mix or application. This book even tells me that I can make a temporary filling for teeth but fails to tell me exactly how to make the filling. This book just has way too many points of telling me that I can do or make something and fails at telling me how to get to that final point.
This is the book that everyone should own. I personally don't believe that this is just for survival situations and preppers. This book could be all that you need to save a life while waiting for emergency personal to show up. I highly recommend this book for anyone who doesn't want to feel helpless in an emergency situation.

I love the concept, but it is not well executed. This is a prime example of someone who has expert knowledge in an area, but a poor understanding of how to present that knowledge in a meaningful way to others. For example, there is a chapter on “the history and physical” that provides information about taking vital signs and performing a systems review. It does not inform the reader how the results of the history/physical impact the “medic’s” plan. For instance, it doesn’t discuss what can or should be done if blood pressure is too high or extremity weakness is found. Additionally, I do not appreciate the “fillers”: chapters on how to survive shark infested waters, mudslides, hurricanes, etc. I did not purchase this book for that type of survival advice. I would have preferred the authors stuck to their survival expertise: medicine. Other fillers include descriptions of diagnoses that will not benefit someone in a survival situation: explanations of types of kidney stones, types of seizures, cholesterol issues, thyroid disease, etc. Let’s be realistic: in the event that no medical professional is available to provide care for a long period of time, we will not be diagnosing thyroid or cholesterol issues. It isn’t a terrible book. I suppose it is a good starting point. It simply did not reach its potential.

VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND THOROUGH.
I don't have their previous editions, but from what I can gather, the authors have significantly expanded their scope in this 3rd edition. It won't make you a doctor, but it will equip you with the vital medical skills needed when there is little or no chance of finding a doctor. The book is written by a medical doctor and an advanced nurse practitioner. It is in layman's terms; all skills and procedures are explained in a simple, straightforward way. Topics include Preparedness; Cleanliness; Triage; Assessment; all manner of Infections; Natural Disasters; Maritime Survival; Biological Warfare & Radiation Sickness; Injuries; Bites; Chronic Medical Conditions such as management of Diabetes, Epilepsy, Heart Disease; CPR; Pregnancy; Anxiety & Depression; Dental Issues; Medication.
The only downside I can find is the size and weight of the book (H229mm × W153mm × 39mm spine, mass = 1040g). (Approximately H 9" × W 6" × 1.5" spine, mass = 2.29lb). It's not the kind of weight you would like in your bug-out-bag, but all things considered, I would be comforted to know I had this resource close at hand. Maybe the publishers can use finer paper next time? At 671 pages (including photos and diagrams), this is a valuable, yet weighty reference book. Keep one on your bookshelf!!

This is the third edition and I have bought every edition. They are always adding to the amount of knowledge and useable information. I am a former paramedic and I can say this is a great textbook for disaster medicine. It is easy to understand and easy to use a reference. This would be a huge asset to anyone's library!

I would like to think that after reading this book I'm definitely more prepared than I was a month ago. I have a neighbor who is an ex-military medic. He says if a SHTF scenario ever took place there will be too type of individuals that will be vital for survival. Medics and ham operators. The doctor and his wife did a great job, the book is very straightforward and simplistic to decipher. This should be a book that every concerned well prepared individuals home.

This book is a good addition to a family medical library. It's based upon the assumption that certain catastrophes (e.g. natural disasters, nuclear war) may leave you and your family isolated from the medical community for a long time. Hence, the book is packed with medical information needed to treat others in an environment where pharmacies are unavailable and trained medical personnel are otherwise occupied or dead. One thing this book isn't: a guide to amateur surgery. There are some things that cannot be done without years of specialized medical training, no matter how desperate the circumstances. Another thing this book isn't: A stand alone compendium of medical knowledge. If your intent is to build a good prepper's medical library, you'll want to supplement it with a Merck Manual (there's one written in plain English), as well as texts dealing specifically with anatomy, drugs (prescription and OTC), and a text geared to symptom identification. Please be advised this book will be of comparatively little value if you don't read it and follow its stockpiling recommendations for supplies, equipment, and medications.

The Survival Medicine hand book, 3rd edition
Joseph Alton and Amy Alton
ISBN 978 098887 2554
Now this is another book that causes issues to us other here in the UK, as the book is written by an American for an American market. Which for the UK or Europe market normally misses the mark massively? When you see “made in mericia” this side of the pond we expect the first line in the book on first aid is. “Walk up to patient with your shotgun in hand”. Or “Using your Glock to make suture holes to sew the patient up, we recommend 5.56 for this role!” The whole imperial thing we also find hilarious as well, take a 10cc syringe and inject 3 oz of blah blah, lol.
So now we know Pete is not a great fan of American books you will be surprised to know he paid £20 for this one and had Amazon ship it to Blighty. Such is the faith I have in these two writers after watching many of their you tube videos.
When you get this book in your hands for the first time you are suddenly struck with the fact this is not the normal American waffle manuals we see so often. These people use their words wisely and with purpose. As people that really have thought on every word, had the book edited professionally and had a large about of reworking done so we have a book I want to read.
The next massive surprise in this work is the list of topics covered. Many only cover deep wounds and bullet holes but we have here bones, sprains and child birth (not in the same chapter.
Both writers clearly make a case for this book at the beginning which is well aimed. A book for when help is not coming, not as uncommon as you would think either.
You are not going to read chapter four and know how to do a gall stone operation but you do have the information to deal with that situation or before its required, learn where to get further information and ideas from.
Practically speaking the book is well written, well presented. Has a clear font and text and is an easy on the eye read. There is few pictures or drawings but that’s ok as it’s an informational book not a do it your self guide. This is the book where beginners like me need to start our medical home training.
So to summarise, yes its American but I don’t hold that against them. Its well written and clear and a great reference guide. In Europe on Amazon its roughly around £20 and well worth it at that cost, I would say its easily still worth while at £25, if you can find a 2nd edition for less then get that too its still worth it.

Great resource for being prepared for medical issues

Excellent book for anyone who wants to be ready for a worst case scenario where medical help may not be available. Well written and easy to find any illness or injury along with how to deal quickly. Pretty comprehensive and although written for an American audience is careful to avoid losing readers from other places.
