Everyone should have at least a .308 rifle and long range scope and learn long range shooting.
800 to 1000 yards is a good range. Special, though expensive scopes and training make you very deadly and in many cases turn armed groups around without putting you and yours in any danger. Ex Military, especially Special Forces will know what I'm talking about. Read "American Sniper" by Chris Kyle to learn the true effectiveness of a sniper.
There is nothing that scares a large group of people than a sniper that they cannot see.
You cannot wait for trouble to come to you if times are very bad and there is no hope of fast or any help from Law Enforcement. If it gets that bad, you are going to have to take things into your own hands. Once a group is at or in your home, it's too late, your dead.
If things are not totally broken down, then maybe the authors suggestion of a Shotgun and Pistol will be fine, but once order is lost, you have to take the lead and own your land, and not even let people sneak up and watch what you are doing.
The authors view of self defence is Naieve and will get you killed when all things in society break down. This could even be something such as a large grid outage that lasts longer than a week. The Author had some great ideas, read Regner for the rest of them.
There are some good ideas in this book, many of them are more practical before things break down such as the Hard room, after the break down, your home will be looted while you hide and then burned to the ground with you in it. You had better have a group with good weapons, lots of ammo and know how to use them as well as effective look outs and trip wires etc. If you don't and there is no Law Enforcement, your dead. Read that part again, your dead. There are better books available to read if it comes down to a total collapse of society. Some of the stories of total breakdowns offer much more info than you'll find here.
The author of this book must have got all his material from the SPLC and the Brady Campaign!
Very basic info you could find free anywhere on the net. I get the feeling from reading this book that the author doesn't even have his own retreat.
Not worth even $.99!
Get the Ragnar Benson books instead. They are full of real information from a real survivalist, not some wannabe "prepper".
