So first let me say that I was really enjoying this book up until we meet the guardians. After that I just could not fully understand the scenes that were going on. I had so many questions on to why this person would do that and this person do this.
We are introduced to Maddie and she seemed to be a very likable character she has had it rough and is now on her own going to college. She doesn't really open up to anyone just because she feels she is bad luck. So when she decides to go hiking on her normal Christmas hike that she has been doing since the lost of her father she doesn't think twice of the danger that is lurking. This is where we meet this strange man I would like to call him a serial killer as he has done this kind of thing before. What he does to her has her hurt and almost dying which then enters the guardians.
Now who the guardians were I totally didn't think of them being the way they were so that was a nice surprise thrown in there. We get to read on as Maddie is healed from her injuries and she falls in love with Rayn which we all know is not suppose to happen.
What happens when Maddie and Rayn get together? Well you have to read to find that out, and the cliff hanger well there is a major one in this one.
So let me tell you why I gave this book a 2 rating. The way the author seemed to switch up the character Maddie from how she was in the beginning was bothersome. She mentions she is clumsy which is normal but yet when she lives with the guardians this girl is a total accident prone chick. I mean the way she is doing this is way too clumsy. Now while we are on this part of being clumsy when she starts fighting back towards the end she is on point....how does that happen? I mean it shows she can fight without knocking herself out and plus she runs for the heck of it and doesn't trip on branches? Makes no sense.
The back and forth between Maddie and Rayn was enough to drive me batty...I mean literally it was like "oh he is hawt I totally want him." Rayn " I can read your mind." Maddie " Oh no I need to remember that because I am so embarrassed." Now it didn't totally go like that but you get the picture. I feel like they could have done better without the back and forth with liking not liking, can be with you, can not be with you type thing going on.
So my last issue is now this is probably going to be a spoiler what is the mark on Maddie's back!!! It was never mentioned and I would have loved to have known what it was. Maybe in book two there will be another mention of it?
I will start off by saying that I did enjoy the book.
However, parts of the story did bother me, like how rude Maddie was while she was being saved in the caves. One minute she seems like a sad weak little girl, and the next minute she is standing up to the ruler of all of Vesteron? She was all over the place. Part of me understands because that is her thing, she is just a mess, but it got a little too out of hand.
Now for the positives. I like how it jumped around. We are in the present, then a flashback, one persons perspective, then some elses. Kept it interesting, and it still had a good flow to it. It kept me wanting to turn the page to see what would happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery surrounding the characters as well as thier development.
I did keep asking myself when the story line would completely come together though. When she was first rescued, there was a quick statement about her having "the mark" on her back, then it was never adressed again, plus she was able to bond with Rayn even though she is a human. Plus being able to smell his "scent" & able to project thoughts..... I kept wondering if she would end up being a half breed or something and that would save Rayn from his dad's rath, but the book ended without clarifying any if this.
I did enjoy the story overall and I am a sucker for aliens. I already purchased the second book and am ready to start it. I just hope that some of my main questions are answered.
