I concur with Piero San Giorgio that there is much we can do besides hand-wringing, prayer, and needless political conflict to facilitate the transition into the next era of human history. I think we also agree on the nature of that journey s destination: a reset, shall we say, to far less complex living arrangements in a world that has grown wider, with fewer people, smaller sovereign units of governance, and reconstructed local economies. The to do list of crucial tasks for civilized people can be stated succinctly: we have to grow our food differently as industrial farming goes obsolete; we have to inhabit the landscape in ways other than suburbia and colossal metroplex cities; we have to move people and things in ways other than airplanes and automobiles; and we have to rebuild the fine-grained, local networks of economic interdependence that will constitutae commerce as we leave the economic dinosaurs of Walmart (and things like it) behind. In this agenda there is no room for crybabies, scapegoating, or pettifogging. Piero San Giorgio lays all this out here with a most refreshing clarity of purpose, which I commend to you as a valuable cram course in how to survive the rest of your life. --James Howard Kunstler

Eye opening and empowering book

This fantastic book does two things:

First, it explains in great details the down right oppressive realities of our economic system. And second, how we can, as individuals or families, create resilience and self-sufficiency intelligently.

The strength of this book is therefore dual. The first part is an academic reference to better understand our modern world. And the second part a simple and pragmatic guide to change, build or fortify our condition within this world by focusing on 7 principles.

The bottom line is that everybody should read this book. From the forward of the well known author James Howard Kunstler (The long emergency / World made by hand) to the last page, this book is fascinating and more importantly empowering.

If the Collapse comes, you'll be glad you read this

Prior to picking up Survive: the Economic Collapse, my impression of survivalism imagined crazy people with tin-foil hats on, bunkers stocked with life time supplies of ketchup and SPAM, and the belief that Armageddon could be overcome with just the right amount of preparation. Instead, this book was completely different from what the mainstream media has told me about survivalism and presents analysis that is both compelling and realistic.

Survive is a thoroughly researched and well-argued analysis of today's most pressing issues ranging from the economy to the environment, historic precedents backed up by statistical data, not to mention a wealth of solutions and resources, both from the author and his extensive bibliography. Whereas it is impossible to predict the scale and timing of collapse, the best lesson to take away is one of self-sufficiency and living within one's own means.

Good overall frame of reference for what to do in the event of...

I recently finished reading this book. Piero San Giorgio provides a good framework for reference in preparation and survival of a societal collapse. The most important thing he covers is how to be self-sufficient and non-reliant on what he asserts is an inevitably unsustainable model of economic growth that we currently live within, which will eventually lead to collapse. When this happens, how/can you support yourself? There will be no food deliveries from suppliers. Drug stores will emptied. Hospitals will be overwhelmed with victims of riots and shortages. Cities in particular will /not/ have the necessary amount of fertile land to create gardens and crops for sustenance - people will become hungry, and hungry people make irrational decisions...

This book is not about sensationalizing the anarchistic implications of such an event. At one point while reading it I did have some feelings of hopelessness and apathy about whether or not I personally even have time for a viable plan of action to "buy into" the system before I can "buy out of it". In other words, to do what Piero has done and finance the necessary preparations for the risk of economic collapse. Piero "sticks his neck out" in his own words and estimates that we are at a risk of global economic collapse between now and 2020...

I do feel somewhat lucky to live in Canada, since it is a great example of Jarod Diamond's reference to "Geographic Luck". A saying we have around here is "when sh*t hits the fan, go north!", because after only a few hours of driving north there is almost nothing in terms of people. The reason I have become more appreciative of this after reading "Survive" is because Piero makes it clear that one of the greatest threats to deal with in times of scarcity will be other people.

Essential Reading

San Giorgio has managed to research, synthesize, and articulate information that seems to boggle the minds of our global community... which problem/crisis is biggest & most important, how are these problems connected, and what can we do? This book breaks down the multi-faceted global crisis in a progressive, realistic, no-nonsense education for the reader, until the only obvious question remaining is, What Can We Do? The seven practices for building a "sustainable autonomous base" are presented as viable, realistic, and comprehensive practices that offer readers the opportunity for real, sustainable, and hopeful change. This is a book that every skeptic should read, and read again. I'm on my second reading now and feel that my first contribution toward change is to plant a seed for other readers to pick up this book and BEGIN.

interesting viewpoint from an European

Fascinating viewpoint of a well travelled European, on a topic which has come to grip the American mind more so than the Continental. Whether it is due to our frontier history, or perhaps our more socially atomized civilization, I don't know. But the cultural backround of the author Piero San Giorgio informs his approach to this topic and enriches it. Missing are many of the tropes of other "survival" works. I enjoy his perspective which lends this work a different tone. Perhaps if someone is looking for an "introduction" style work, which approaches the topic with greater subtlety, this would be more congenial.

Piero San Giorgio also has an interesting youtube channel. I saw a long interview with the excellent writer, journalist and advocate of the New Urbanism, James Howard Kunstler. Very worthwhile.

Interesting alternate view on the subject of survival - worth the cost!

I have read numerous books on this subject but most have been by American authors. This book, written by a European, is another noteworthy take on the same topic. The book will give you a lot to consider and many great ideas on how you might personally secure your own future. This is a thoroughly researched and thought out booked packed with valuable (and very usable) information. If this is an issue that causes you concern, Survive - The Economic Collapse needs to be in your library.
