Lynda McGuirk survived a motor vehicle accident in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts that landed her in a coma for six weeks. When McGuirk regained consciousness, she learned that she’d suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), a condition that made even simple things in life difficult.
As McGuirk searched for resources to ease the transition, she found plenty of books by neurologists and social workers, but very few written by actual survivors of TBI—people with first-hand knowledge of the experience of piecing a life back together after a brain injury.
So, after getting her own life back on track, McGuirk decided to fill the void and wrote this simple yet powerful guide to help anyone who has suffered a TBI to reclaim and enjoy his or her life.
With her intimate knowledge of the challenges faced by survivors and the arduous recovery process, McGuirk equips readers to tackle head-on the challenges of reentering life after TBI, including straightening out finances, dealing with housing challenges, and resuming work.
With humor, grace, and compassion, McGuirk shares her experiences as a patient and survivor in the hope of encouraging others affected by TBI in their journey toward recovery.

Though the outer healing is difficult enough, she states that what persists is the massive course of healing from the inside out. It would be the support of her community, friends, and family that would be paramount in aiding her in her needs. Independent by nature, a challenge would be in learning to ask for help. Journey with her as she regains a sense of her identity and individuality. Though she declares the obstacles of this condition, "… difficult barriers erected by TBI became permanent residences on the property of your life", it would be her perseverance that would win out as today she owns her own small business.
The reader will gain more awareness of the importance exercise and good nutrition play in recovery and pictures of various stretches are shown to help with balance issues. This will be a helpful resource if you especially know and/or work with someone that has TBI.
This is a hard book to review. One it is incredibly short, a mere 40+ pages. It merely skims upon the car accident that caused her TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and her recovery process. Although, it is interesting, I wish it was more detailed. I assume the poorly formatted copy was because it was a digital ARC and hopefully the final, published version was a clean, formatted copy, I don't know if there was just a lack of editing or what, but I also found thoughts and phrases repeated a few times, more so in the first half of the book, rather than the last half. Kudos though to Ms. McGuirk for writing this.
