About the author

Lauren Tarshis often wonders how she came to spend most of her waking moments thinking about disasters, as the author of the children's historical fiction series "I Survived." Each book takes readers into the heart of history's most thrilling and terrifying events, including the sinking of the Titanic, the Shark Attacks of 1916, Hurricane Katrina, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the San Francisco earthquake, 9/11, the Battle of Gettysburg and many more.
Lauren conducts extensive research to bring her topics to life. She has traveled to most of the locations where her books are set. Her goal is to open readers' eyes to new chapters in history and to inspire them with stories of hope and resilience.
Lauren is also the author of the the award-winning Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree, and is the editor of Storyworks Magazine.

One of the things I felt was less than realistic was an 11 year old running around New York City by himself. I guess it could happen but I would think that trying to get into a city that large and by yourself you would be asking for trouble. I thought it would have been more believable if Lucas had been with an adult. I also felt it was unrealistic that Uncle Benny made it out of the building alive. One fire fighter carrying one injured person on their back and leaving their fellow firefighters didn't seem very likely. If Uncle Benny had responded with his company immediately, the likelihood that he would have started down the stairs in time to flee the building before it collapsed is not very believable. Most of the firefighters who perished were some of the first ladder companies to respond. Ladder Company #4 lost an entire shift of firefighters. Their loss was the most among one Ladder company in New York City with 15 firefighters dead.
I think this book is great for kids who want to learn about the attacks of September 11th. This date caused a huge change in our country's national security and affected the personal privacy of every citizen of the United States. The Patriot Act came directly from this attack on our country's soil and was implemented to allow all security agencies in the United States to communicate with one another to stop future potential terrorist attacks. The way the author leads us through the time line of the events that day helps give a person the chance to see just how quickly things happened.
This day was a tragedy and made the United States realize that things like this could happen in our country. We now have the alert system and it seems that every single day we are in an elevated alert status. As more terrorist attacks happen across the world we must continue our efforts to combat these forces of evil that take innocent lives in the name of religion.
