Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

With her trademark no-nonsense approach and building on the principles developed during her long career as a licensed therapist, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Laura shows readers how to survive enemies—traitors, backstabbers, and saboteurs—at work and at home.

In her previous New York Times bestsellers, author and renowned radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has helped countless men and women become better husbands, wives, parents, and people. She's helped them cope with grief; encouraged them to be moral, compassionate, and considerate individuals; shown them how to handle adversity; and set them on the path to understanding and living happy, well-adjusted lives.

Now, in this long-awaited book, Dr. Laura turns to an emotionally explosive subject that has touched all our lives: betrayal and the desire for revenge. And for the first time, she shares her own personal experiences with betrayal, humiliation, and pain, which have led her to a powerful desire for revenge. Intimate and honest, Dr. Laura connects with her readers as never before and puts this subject into context:

I concluded that betrayals are frightening, destructive, painful, humiliating, demoralizing, and so very, very hard to repair. Betrayals undermine people, relationships (marriages and families), institutions (churches, schools, businesses, government, politics)—everything. The entire fabric of humanity depends upon people depending upon each other for their word, honesty, and loyalty.

Millions of Dr. Laura's listeners struggle with the idea of taking revenge and how to accept when it cannot be achieved. For many who have been betrayed, justice may never be served, she reminds us. Empathetic yet never saccharine, direct yet never harsh, Dr. Laura encourages readers to explore their feelings and learn to get beyond them, supplying tools they can use to achieve fulfilling, contented lives free of rancor and the need to settle scores.

Powerful and thought-provoking, Surviving a Shark Attack (on Land) gives readers the emotional defenses they need to overcome the worst life will throw at them, whether it's a cheating spouse, a lying sibling, or a ruthless colleague.

I read this short book and found it kind of all over the place. Revenge is good. Revenge is bad. Revenge can be good, if it stops harm. Or maybe though, revenge will just make you feel worse.

Which is it?

Well, it depends on which chapter of the book you are reading. As Amazon reviewer Beth Smith said, the book is heavily anecdotal, so how effective or desirable revenge (or no revenge) will be seems to depend on each individual case. Moreover, there are all types of "revenge," but again, the "best" revenge--if any--apparently depends on the unique circumstances of the betrayal.

Me, I was hoping--having been nastily betrayed by a couple of people in recent years--to pin down a set of "steps" or a plan for working through feelings of anger, wanting revenge, etc.

Unfortunately, while Dr. Laura makes some good points in the book--for example, that the time you spend being angry and bitter toward your betrayer can negatively impact not only you but the ones you love--she simply does not provide a consistent, practical set of guidelines for dealing with betrayal. So 3 stars is being charitable, I think.

Frankly, Dr. Laura's book seemed less like a helpful "how to" guide than like a "stream of consciousness" exercise in expressing (1) her frustration with her many years of feeling betrayed by colleagues, supposed friends, etc. , and (2) the things she's been doing to get beyond this frustration.

I just got this book and have already read it twice. For anyone dealing with a "shark" it helps you deal and realize there are just plain evil people out there that do not and will not accept that what they are doing is wrong and so very hurtful. It has made me look at myself and how I have let this woman torment me for almost 20 years. I could never understand why family would not stand up to her and seemed to accept her lies as gospel but now I do. Why they do not want to be her next victium and it is easier to just look the other way.

The quotes in the chapter bylines are the best part of this book. I like Dr. Laura, listen often to her show, and have read other of her excellent books. This fell far short of what I was expecting or hoping to get out of her book. It is mostly anecdotal in nature without any real deep analysis of how to handle betrayal. She does give some of her personal experiences, but in the end, I was shocked to see that her final reaction is "I don't give a damn." That really surprised me because that reaction means you still really do care. I also just read "Unbroken", a true story by Laura Hillenbrand about an American POW in Japan during WW II. Now that is a book that deals with overcoming betrayal. "Unbroken" made me feel deep contemplation. After breezing through Dr. Laura's short and uninspiring book, I feel like I sat down to the dinner table and was served cotton candy. Unsatisfied, disappointed, cheated. The 2 books are about the same in price. "Unbroken" will actually give you some tools to deal with betrayal and some real inspiration for dealing with betrayal, disappointment, and difficult times.

If you disagree with Dr Laura, it isn't because of her candor. She is on the mark and straight from the hip. All her books are practical and no nonsense. Let's face it. "Life is tough and it's tougher if your stupid" (John Wayne) People are fickle and short sighted. This book will help you deal with being Betrayed , let down, and offended. If you don't need this book, one of your friends do... or will. Be prepared to help them... show wisdom and be proactive. No one has ever said I wish I wasn't as wise as you.

I just read this book. I wish I hadn't. I'd bought it because of some issues I'm dealing with, and the title does contain the words "Overcoming Betrayal" after all. But there is little about overcoming anything, just her venting about people who supposedly betrayed her in the past, and how she's survived and thrived in spite of it while they ultimately didn't. And then there was the thing at the end about the incident with her repeating the n-word on national radio, which sounded incredibly whiny to me. She didn't even take her own advice that she gives when she's talking down to callers: take some responsibility. It was the free market at work there, not her First Amendment rights being threatened, but I'd be surprised if she ever acknowledged that. For someone who doesn't want to see herself as a victim, she certainly writes like one. I don't normally care for Dr. Laura, but I did pick up the book thinking there might be some common sense advice but I ended up feeling more tense than I did before. I seemed to have forgotten that she is, first and foremost, an entertainer. If you're looking for advice and dealing with the after-effects of a betrayal, or "shark attack," save your money and look elsewhere.

I'm a big fan of Dr.Laura, but I bought this for my mother's birthday in July 2012. She enjoyed it and I'm sure it was good. Dr. Laura has helped me through a lot in my life. I have over 700 quotes from her that I put together myself!!!!

Definitely a must read. I picked up the book and finished it in one sitting because the content was so engrossing. Not only are there examples from her callers but also Dr. Laura's use of her experiences and her struggles and triumphs in coping with attacks and betrayals makes this a very personal story. The afterward is incredible too. Thanks Dr. Laura for an inspiring read.
