Blog postHarbinger of spring. © 2018 Susan J. Kroupa Keeping an eye out. . . © 2018 Susan J. Kroupa Spring is here! Naturally, the robins were the harbingers, the early birds, so to speak.
A few days ago, on the first warmish sunny day in a long time, I went out to the garden and saw the first bumblebee of the season. I grabbed my camera, which I’d brought out with me, but by the time I got close enough to focus, the bee shot up from the dandelion and zoomed across the garden3 years ago Read more -
Blog postRuff-Housed I was beyond delighted when I learned that the fifth book in the series, Ruff-Housed, won the Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) AKC S.T.A.R. In my last post, Not Looking Good for Our Hero, I told how we came home after Christmas to find Shadow barely able to walk. In just a few days, he lost the ability to stand on his own. Over the next few weeks, our local vet (whose entire staff gave him excellent care) treated him for a spinal embolism, a condition that often has a good outcome. When that showed no results and his condition worsened, we scheduled a consultation wit3 years ago Read more -

If you’ve read any of my Doodlebugged books or followed this blog, you know that Doodle is the alter ego of my dog, Shadow. Granted, Doodle is smarter and even more trouble prone than Shadow, and able to earn a living, something Shadow has never attained, nor (to my knowledge) aspired to. But Doodle’s prove-it-to-me attitude, his sense of being equal to or (more likely) superior to any of th3 years ago Read more

Blog postA very long year… It’s been fourteen months since my last blog about the extraordinary support we received during my daughter’s illness and death from colon cancer. (And, again, if you’re due for a colonoscopy, please don’t put it off. Yeah, the prep tastes like fruit punch infused with rusted metal and laced with turpentine, but a day’s discomfort is nothing compared to having cancer or watching someone you love have cancer. Absolutely nothing.)

Blog postShadow leads the way on a walk in the hills above Utah Valley I’m a sporadic blogger at best, but the last post here was April 13, seven months ago. As Doodle would say, “Whoa.” The blog was titled, “Times, They Are A’ Changing.” That turned out to be sadly prophetic in a way I couldn’t have possibly foreseen. Our lives have undergone a sea change, or, as I prefer to say, a C-change.

Blog postShadow’s barks, urgent in their “this is important” tone, made me look outside with curiosity. Outside, the air was a chilly seven degrees and the wind made the “feels like” temperature well below zero. What could he be barking at? He was at the end of the driveway, edging forward and then darting back as if something might be after him.

Doodle finds best part of the new job is Molly, the boss’s ten-year old daughter, who slips Doodle extra treats when she’s not snapping photos with the camera she carries everywhere. But Molly has secrets of her own. And when she enlists Doodle’s help to solve a crime, his nose and her camera lead them straight into danger.

Sit. Stay. Be Polite with Strangers. What could be easier?
That’s what Doodle thinks when Molly signs him up to take the Canine Good Citizen Test, only to discover it’s no walk (or sit) in the park. Did he miss the memo about the explosions?
