Product Description

From Robert Siodmak, the legendary director of The Spiral Staircase, The Killers, Cry of the City, Criss Cross and The Crimson Pirate, comes this classic film noir starring acting great Charles Laughton (Witness for the Prosecution). Philip Marshall (Laughton) is a kind, henpecked accountant who strikes up a friendship with Mary Gray (Ella Raines, Phantom Lady), a young unemployed stenographer who had approached him for work. He gradually finds himself falling in love with her, but keeps the relationship platonic. With his wife suspecting him of having an affair, Philip asks her for a divorce, but she refuses and threatens him with exposure and scandal. When his wife is found dead of an apparent accident, Inspector Huxley (Stanley Ridges, An Act of Murder) of Scotland Yard suspects Marshall of murder, but is unable to prove it or establish a motive.

Charles Laughton’s acting is so great you will cry at the end. The plot is amazing . There’s mystery and there’s no bad language. So worth the money.

This film is a wonderful example of Charles Laughton's acting gift, as well as his character's love interest, played by Ella Raines. One cannot overlook, however, the strong (and that may be an understatement) portrayal of the "bad" characters, namely Charles' wife and next-door neighbor, who are both excellent. I think the film is great because I disagree with how most reviews read the end of the film -- I believe that Charles is perfectly fine with how everything turns out. That is, I do NOT believe that his character is headed toward failure; I think he has skirted every pitfall and knows that he will enjoy the rest of his life!

The age difference between Philip and Mary stretches credulity a little, but there is a great deal to enjoy in this film. The depiction of life in London at the turn of the 20th Century is first rate, as is the depiction of a marriage made in hell. The shrewish wife is played wonderfully by Rosalind Ivan.

Laughton is as magnificent as always and the rest of the cast (with one exception) are first-rate.

The one exception is Stanley Ridges as the Inspector, although I suspect that my complaint may be more about the nature of his role, rather than his performance of it.

The narrative is none too subtle. Whilst I enjoyed the film enough to rank it 5*, I feel that the flaws should deter me from that.

I recently watched this old movie on YouTube and I loved it! I had to come to Amazon to see if it was available and it was! Others have described the plot and I don't want to give anything away like someone else in the reviews did, unfortunately! Just a few things I wanted to mention: One is that there is nothing sexy in this movie as in so many other film noirs from the 1940's. Therefore, it can be enjoyed by those who are striving for the virtue of chastity and who love good stories but don't want to stoke the fires of lust in their souls by watching beautiful women acting seductively. The sexy picture of Ella Raines on the cover must be from another one of her movies because she doesn't look anything like that in this film. Secondly, I bought the Kino Lorber dvd and was surprised that there were English subtitles on it which was very nice because some of the dialogue is hard to discern with the British accents. This film kept me guessing right to the end!

Charles Laughton is not my favorite actor however, he was good in this movie. It’s an interesting and suspenseful movie.

Charles Laughton was superb. Ella Raines was always wholesome and sweet. Never once did she appear as she is portrayed on the cover. Was that misleading? Or am I missing something? Earlier in the movie she was describing Phillip (Laughton) as having a son. At the end she goes into the ship's cabin with the son.....implying? But fate intervenes and takes Phillip in a different direction-- then we are left to imagine the rest.

Set in Victorian era London, an unhappily married man (Charles Laughton) falls in love with a young secretary (Ella Raines, HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO). When his bitter shrew of a wife (Rosalind Ivan, who ironically would play a similar role in Fritz Lang's SCARLET STREET the following year, refuses to give him a divorce and threatens to ruin him and the girl ..... he has no recourse but murder! Expertly directed by noir stylist Robert Siodmak (THE KILLERS), this is a wonderful thriller. The Victorian period setting allows Siodmak and cinematographer Paul Ivano (QUEEN KELLY) an opportunity to dispense an atmosphere rich in environment and tone. But it's Laughton's adroit performance, one of his very best, that's the film's backbone. Laughton's Philip Marshall is a decent man, not a murderer so one's empathy is entirely with him. The two murder victims in the film are vile, destructive persons whose death benefits those around them. The detective (Stanley Ridges) who pursues Laughton is only doing his job yet he comes across to a modern viewer as unappealing as LES MISERABLES's Javert dogged pursuit of Jean Valjean. The film is not without humor, the funeral scene has some wit to it. A jewel of a suspense film. The nicely applied score is by Frank Skinner (WRITTEN ON THE WIND). With Henry Daniell, Dean Harens and Molly Lamont.

The Llamentol DVD from Spain is a nice clean transfer in its appropriate 1.33 aspect ratio. The audio is in both English or Spanish with optional Spanish subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars du grand siodmak...

And Hats off, Mr Laughton.

Food for Thoughts, comme ils disent outre-Manche.

A bon entendeur. Et surtout bonne séance de cinéma.
