Though the book is called Suspension, there is no hesitation here in how Paige Riehl describes the complicated, outrageous, glorious, and grief-stricken world in which we all live. The subjects are varied--love, children, illness, travel--but the voice speaking the poems goes unfailingly to the challenges of our 21st-century western world. The poems often afford a resolution, no matter how momentary. There is rawness here as well as delight. Perhaps most telling, the book is a sustained meditation on love in its many guises. About the Author

Paige Riehl has published poems in Crab Orchard Review, Water-Stone Review, Portland Review, Meridian, and elsewhere. She is the author of the poetry chapbook Blood Ties. She won the 2012-2013 Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and the 2011 Literal Latte Prize for Poetry. She is the Poetry Editor for Midway Journal and an English department faculty member at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. A seasoned traveler, she has explored 19 countries and lived for a summer in Ireland and for a few months in Spain. She now lives in Saint Paul, MN, with her family. SUSPENSION is her debut full-length poetry book. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Suspension is the temporary prevention of something from continuing, according to the Oxford Dictionary. While reading Paige Riehl's collection of poetry, I too felt in a state of suspension. I felt unable to turn a page, as I had to stop and reflect on the context, the mood, the intent, and the beauty of the words, before I could go on. Each poem temporally left me unable to start a new poem until I had time to allow it to weave through my mind and even my soul. Suspension still haunts me and it still heals me.

No easy poetic tricks here. These poems sing from deep within of the complexities of family, loving, the body's foibles, and the uniqueness of place. I know I will return and read Suspension again and again.
