I read the whole thing in one sitting. I love drama in books. So when they hate each other in the beginning... all the better!!! But these characters never redeemed themselves to each other in my eyes. Luke hated her through the whole book and didn't trust her and then BAM!!! He's all "she's my girl" and "no i'm the one whose sorry".
It was so forced and unbelievable.. I never got that big sigh of relief with this book. Like "damn they made it through the fire together."
There wasn't enough back story given with the characters to make me fall in love with them. Bri kept saying things like "i want my best friend back." But I never really experienced their closeness from when they were young, so I never really had a vested interest in them getting back together. It was told about, but never shown to the reader in my opinion.
Bri was my favorite person in this book. She kicked ass. Literally. She gave as good as she got.
Luke drove me crazy!!! He was so wishy washy the whole book! And if he supposedly loved her deep down the whole time, then he should have beat Emerson to a pulp. That guy was so mean to Bri and Luke did nothing about it. It pissed me off!!! She had to beat up Emerson herself! (hence the bad ass).
And with the big secret of why she left him all those years ago. I kept thinking okay, it'll fix everything when it comes out, the world of Luke and Bri will be righted. And then its revealed and..."that's it?" I don't blame him for hating her and I don't blame her for doing what she did. It resolved nothing for the characters and Luke was still a jerk through the whole thing. And then all of a sudden he wasn't, and it was all rainbows and sunshine.. a huh. No
I was so disappointed with this book. But i will still eagerly await new books from Tijan because they are the BEST! (Usually...)
This novel is so much more than a love story. It's a story about siblings and a very complicated band. Love goes from family to friends, and then ex boyfriends.
Bri starts off the story in a very precarious situation, her boyfriend gets arrested. Her brother is beyond excited that Bri and Elijah are over. She is broken up over the fact he lied to her and she defended him against her friends and family. What Bri is not prepared for is her lust for Luke the lead singer of the band she used to be in. Luke is apprehensive about letting Bri back in the band, though she longs to play the drums again. She's barely spoken with Luke in years, but some feelings can't be pushed down.
Bri had a tumultuous relationship with Emerson who happens to be her cousin. They get into it throughout the entire book, yet she helps him when he gets so high he can't function. He resents her. Emerson is constantly riding her, and nagging about her mistakes.
Bradon the most pervy brother a girl could have. He has like ADD when it comes to women, he goes from one to the next. He isn't the "relationship" type. Bri and Bradon have an awesome relationship, they are always there for each other.
Luke the damaged lead singer of Sustain holds Bri at arms length. He wants to trust her, but really he can't...not yet at least. He wants what's best for the band, but he needs to figure out what Bri wants first.
The dynamic between all the characters is what brings this book together. Yes, there is a romance aspect and it is prevalent but so are all the other characters. Tijan is able to make a complete story between Bri and Luke, while still integrating the other band members. They all have a story and at the end as a reader you're not left wondering what happened to them. I cared about every single character, even the jerk Emerson.
Let's be real, the sex scenes are hot. Smoking...hot. The romance reader in me screamed, and stopped to re-read sections over and over again. You will not be disappointed.
I have read a ton of rocker books, I have an entire shelf for them on Goodreads. This book stands up to all of them and holds its own. Bravo Tijan, bravo.
