Bought this for adventure racing. It replaced my 7yr old Brunton OSS 40D. Had trouble with the printing on the Brunton wearing off after not much use. (Refer to Amazon reviews of the Brunton and you will see other people who have had this problem with the Brunton as well.)
Just completed a grueling 12hr race this past weekend, using this compass. Deep backwoods, hard core navigation. Performed flawlessly.
This Suunto is an engineered piece of equipment. All aspects well thought out by Suunto folks.
I originally bought he Brunton OSS 40D because it was tool-less, and I had no fear of losing a tiny little tool required on other compasses, including this Suunto. Not to worry. Declination adjustment was smooth but firm, and easy to be precise. I worried at times about my Brunton declination unknowingly shifting if the compass experienced a hard impact or heavy handling/racing. I'm sold on the Suunto declination design now. Love it. No worries.
Usability on mapwork: excellent.
This Suunto has small rubber feet to keep the printing up off the map, preventing it from wearing off. Also allows it to grip nicely to paper, waterproof map, and waterproof map case.
The parallel lines inside the bearing window made it very easy to take a bearing on a map.
**Glow in the dark bezel was shockingly amazing. This ain't the the old glow-in-the-dark frisbee stuff we played with as kids. Close your eyes, power on even a weak flashlight or headlamp. Wave light over the compass within 1 inch or so for only 2-3sec. Turn off light. Open eyes. This dude GLOWS, and stays usably bright for more than 5min. You can easily read bearings and navigate in complete darkness with this glow feature. I expected little from this feature, and got a LOT more than that. Pretty nice.
**Bezel/bearing ring was easy to adjust with gloves on.
**needle settled out quickly and was steady. Since there is no fluid filling on this compass, you don't need to worry about any bubble formation (which Always a bummer). Not with this compass.
**The "feel" is good too. A solid piece of equipment but not heavy.
Buy it. I won't go back to the Brunton.
No I'm not a Suunto person. I'm an outdoor enthusiast like you. I need stuff that works, and lasts.
The directions that came with the compass were a little vague but actually using the compass made more sense. One thing I had trouble with was adjusting the declination, which you need to use a web site to adjust correctly for whatever region you're in. Adjustable declination: excellent
The clear plate makes it VERY easy to line everything up on the map when you're trying to figure out where you're going. Excellent.
I am very clumsy. This is just the right size to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand without being too big. The string that came with the compass was MUCH too short - I'd like to have it long enough to go around my neck but I suppose the string that is included could be looped put around your wrist.
The dial that you use to change the face (this is how much I know about compasses, I don't know what it's called) is VERY easy to move to where you need it to go the first time without having to play a lot.
I assume most people know not to have magnetic objects near their compass as it will mess up the N/S position of the needle, but I think pretty much any metal will do that. The needle also moves easily and quickly without being too fast.
This is the first compass I have used in about 20 years or so and I managed to navigate my yard and land within two feet of where I needed to be. Excellent buy for the money. :)
Apparently this compass is good for search and rescue stuff too because of the adjustable declination and the 2 degree markers. Haven't needed to use the glow in the dark. I think if I'm lost in the dark I'm pretty SOL, compass or not. :D
