The GPS functionality worked better than expected especially with Movescount app. The app is lacking in some features I would like to see but does the job. This is my first Suunto and I am glad I made the plunge. This is a great watch with a lot of features and a battery that will last 6-15 days depending on the settings. Remember, if your battery is depleting quickly, its probably a setting. Make sure to set your GPS accuracy to "good" to retain decent battery life. All in all a great, yet comfortable watch that does not feel heavy on the wrist. Take the plunge...you wont be dissatisfied.
First of all-- the pics (mine or the google ones) DO NOT do this watch justice. It looks nice enough to wear every day, any occasion, short of super formal. I have watches that cost me 20 times what this one cost, and I like this one better :-)
The first time I tried to get GPS signal, I was outside my office. It took almost 5 minutes. I had just set the "gps time" feature ON. The watch wanted to log onto the sats to figure out where I was. It did, then it immediately gave me my position and the sunrise sunset info. I've asked for gps location 5 times since, and 2 of those times I was INDOOR-- got signal in seconds.
Standing outside my house, I tried that one button push "log POI" feature (kind of like dropping a pin on google or apple maps)... It took literally 2 seconds to find sats and log the point. Then I walked a small path in my neighborhood that I know is exactly 500m. The watch logged the walk as 0.5km, perfect.
I know-- none of this is groundbreaking nor did I put the watch through some strenuous tests, but nevertheless-- it does the things it's supposed to do exactly the way they claim it does them. With all the crap out there (in general, not necessarily watches) I AM IMPRESSED.
Can't wait till the weekend to mess with ALL its features.
Would Definitely recommend.
PS.... IOS notifications working perfectly.
I returned it. I absolutley hated the app and the terrible connection to my phone. After getting a taste of the semi-smart watch function this watch provided, I got a Samsung Gear S3 and love it. I hated my Suunto Core after a month having to buy a new band and the wear and tear on the bezel, so I don't know what I was thinking investing in another Suunto. Overall, the watch LOOKS cool, but that is all. I will personally never invest in Suunto again. Everything this watch has, you can find in a Garmin or most smart watches and they will work better too.
I love the way this watch looks. I owned a Suunto Core and was not impressed with the band breaking, having to buy a better one, and the bezel chipping and scratching as well. But I figured this one would be different. I think they designed it well, but the need for an app to utilize the smart function is horrible. If their app is not open on your phone and connected (which can take multiple tries) then you won't get notifications. I did not get this watch for the smart functions. But after having them the first day, I realized how much easier and nicer it is to look at your watch for a missed call or text than grab your phone, especially when you are not supposed to have your phone out at work or something. So I am starting to contemplate a return after a week of normal usage and just going with a samsung gear or something. I have not tried the GPS mainly because I have a Garmin Fortrex 401 for that stuff, but thought it would be nice to have on my watch as well, or maybe even replace the Garmin all together. However, The settings menu navigation is a PITA, and so is the need for an app to be open at all times. I close all my apps when not using, and disable background data as well as save as much battery as possible, so to need it open and not even have it function properly if I walk 15 feet away from my phone is not what I call functional. But hey, it looks good... so 3 stars there...
Overall, I am torn between just getting a smart watch that can also do GPS and all the crap you really don't need as well as send me notifications, or just going back to my old g-shock. I have to be honest, since this is my 2nd Suunto, I am not impressed and would not recommend it, nor will I ever buy another one. I honestly expected more from this watch, and rarely leave negative reviews, but the only thing the Traverse has going for it, is looks. I am not a looks kind of guy, I need function over form.
