Joe Canzano is recognized as a pro in the realm of science fiction – his own brand – and this second episode from his Suzy Spitfire series lifts a hat to his growth as a writer/creator of imaginative ideas, written in a fast-paced polished mode. His style is evident with the opening paragraph: “Suzy Spitfire ran a slender finger through her coppery hair and tried to smile. With a little luck, she looked like all the other peaceful pedestrians strolling through downtown Atlanta. It was a hot summer night, and the hover-cars roared by, and it would be nice to blend in with the waves of smiley people on the busy sidewalks – but no, they all seemed so distant. They’re all part of a big pretty picture, she thought, and I’m part of something else. Of course, none of them were wanted fugitives throughout the Nine Nations of Earth, not to mention the rest of the solar system. None of them were being followed by an ugly guy with bad intentions.’ And for those new to Joe Canzano’s heroine, this snapshot informs a lot!
On his website Joe offers his own overview of the novel’s storyline: ‘Outlaw Suzy Spitfire, still haunted by memories of her sister’s death, finds herself trying to make a fresh start in a floating city – but instead, she ends up in the middle of a gang war, a violent revolution, and the hunt for a vicious serial killer.’
Need some relief from the current chaos? Open this book and soar into the wild and crazy world of Suzy Spitfire. In addition to being a completely entertaining escape, the book gives notice of a fast growing sci-fi writer. Grady Harp, May 21
Suzy, a brazen young woman looking for redemption for things that she did in the first book of the series, needs to find a way forward after her life is turned upside down. She is faced with a decision to break ties with those close to her on earth and go on a mission to Venus for a chance at a reset for her life or remain on the run on Earth with limited resources and a dim future. Of course, she chooses the former and it is a wild ride, indeed.
When it comes to the style, the storyline is well-crafted and moves at a decent clip throughout the entire story. There were no times when I felt myself wishing that the pacing was better. In fact, the spunky heroine of the story has a life which is interconnected with those of the auxiliary characters and the author makes sure that readers can learn enough about them to build a connection, even if their focus is primarily on the main character and how her adventure on Venus is unfolding.
The author writes a few different stories, in fact, layered atop one another, with the primary tale taking center stage. It is a level of depth that help keep the book’s pace up and aids in the believability of the characters and events as well.
The author also leans more towards a style that is down to Earth and uncomplicated making this book an easy read for readers of a wide range of skill and experience. That said, it is not a book for young readers as there are more than a few graphic scenes that may not be suitable for some audiences. However, for the rest of us, the added grit and realism add a perfect flair to the somewhat classic science fiction themes that run through the pages of the book. Not only does it help us identify with the characters as they make their way through their adventure, but it adds just the right amount of color to keep things fun.
Suzy Spitfire and the Snake Eyes of Venus is a fun book that takes readers on quite a ride. With good pacing and just enough action packed into the 331 pages to keep things exciting, this title deserves the 5-star rating I’m giving it. I’ll be looking forward to more self-published works from “Happy Joe Control”.

There’s definitely a strong archetype to hand with Suzy as a sexy badass cyberchick bountyhunter with a murdered father origin story; we could imagine Lara Croft made her Cyperpunk 2020 avatar and it was Suzy.
The book is action-oriented, and dialogue (which is well-written) mostly is there to either advance the plot or allow for witty quips. These latter are fun too, by the way—a lot of authors reach for such and miss, whereas Canzano consistently kept me entertained.
For me, I can’t honestly say I ever got too invested in the actual plot—it was more about the moments along the way. But since those moments were great fun and I’d do it again and want to read more of the same character, I’ll go ahead and give this one five stars. And, by the way, for me that’s always the mark of the best fiction—it’s the cool characters and/or the imagination-sparking world that make it magical for me, and this book scores on both counts. Yep, even without a huge amount of depth to either!
This cake is 90% icing, but I loved it, so I guess we’d call it a guilty pleasure if I weren’t completely unashamed about guilty pleasures?

The plot had plenty of twists and turns and I found myself riveted because of how off kilter I was. It is not often a book does that to me.
The world the author built was complex and wonderfully created.
If you are a fan of badass women and sci-fi, I would definitely advise you read this book.

There is plenty of fast-moving action and an exciting energy to the writing. The lawless world that Suzy finds herself in is vividly described, full of colour changing fashion, hover cars, domed cities and identity changes. The excitement of galactical gun fights and shoot outs is nicely balanced with scenes of sizzling chemistry between Suzy and her lover, Ricardo and her blossoming friendship with teenage Kiara who she fights to protect right to the end. Suzy yearns for a quieter life and encourages Ricardo to leave the gang lifestyle but will they be able to escape or are they are in too deep?

Most of the famous interstellar gun slingers are men. Movies are made about them and they are immortalized for their ability to not give a damn while they traipse the constellations on their journeys. Suzy, on the other hand, is a human being with real feelings and facing real consequences to her actions. She seems to be a magnet for chaos and channels that into her need to do something good; to leave a positive mark on the burning landscape of history.
It’s a testament to Canzano’s ability to write every time a character speaks. They sound like real human beings; questionable language and all. This brings the reader closer to the characters and we being to regard them as friends. Even though this is a second installment in a series, first time readers won’t feel like they’ve missed crucial details and will still be able to enjoy the story.
A strong female lead who cares about her comrades and sticks her neck out for the vulnerable ones is the kind of character readers will fall in love with when they read Suzy Spitfire and the Snakes Eyes of Venus by Joe Canzano. Suzy isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and she won’t back down from a fight. You’d be remise to pass this excellent story by.
